Sony's PlayStation3 beats Nintendo's Wii U over Black Friday

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sony Corp sold over 525,000 PlayStation3 consoles in the United States during the week of Black Friday that kicks off the holiday shopping season, surpassing sales of Nintendo's new Wii U.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc said on Thursday that sales of its six-year-old PlayStation3 jumped 9 percent over the same period last year. The sales compared with over 400,000 units sold of Nintendo's Wii U, the new console on which the Japanese company is staking much of its future.

Microsoft Corp sold over 750,000 units of its Xbox 360 console during the week of Black Friday, one of the heaviest U.S. consumer-spending periods of the year.

The results could deal a blow to Nintendo, which is hoping that the Wii U, which comes with a touchscreen "GamePad" controller, will revive growth and pull it out of the red in coming years. Since its November 18 U.S. launch, the Wii U has been marred by technical glitches, including long software download times.

Analysts have said the initial sales numbers may have been curbed by insufficient supply, common during the launch of new products.

On Monday, Nintendo said Wii U consoles were "effectively sold out" in U.S. retail stores.

Sales of consoles and portable handheld game devices like the Nintendo 3DS are crumbling as gamers migrate to offerings on smartphones and tablets. According to research firm NPD Group, video game hardware sales slid 37 percent in October from a year ago.

The battle between the three game makers is expected to intensify when Sony and Microsoft launch their own next-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles, expected in 2013.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - And so it came to pass that in the eighth year of Pope Benedict's reign, some tabloid and social media decreed that he had cancelled Christmas.

The day after Benedict's latest book "The Infancy Narratives - Jesus of Nazareth" - was published on November 20, Vatican officials found some headlines they were not expecting.

"Killjoy pope crushes Christmas nativity traditions," read one tabloid headline, claiming that Benedict had snubbed traditions such as animals in nativity scenes and caroling.

"Pope sets out to debunk Christmas myths," ran another.

Holy Scrooge! Some blogs unceremoniously branded Benedict the new Grinch that stole Christmas and one rocketed him to the "top of the grumpy list for 2012."

And then there was this zinger headline from a web news site: "Pope bans Christmas".

Coming little more than a month before Christmas, it was the last thing the Vatican needed - another image problem for the pope.

Alarmed by some of the headlines, the Catholic social network XT3 felt compelled to run a blog that dissected the media's coverage of the book.

It was headlined: "The pope has not banned Christmas".

So what was all the fuss about?

In the 137-page book, the pope states a fact: that in the gospels there is "no reference" to the presence of animals in the stable - actually, it was probably a cave - where Jesus was born.

Bloggers had a feast with that, with one calling it "Bombshell number one".

What some neglected was that just a few sentences down, the pope states that even today, "No representation of the crib is complete without the ox and the ass".

He explains: The tradition of the ass and ox came from reflecting on parts of the Old and New Testaments. Christian iconography then adopted the motif early in Church history to show that even animals knew Jesus was the son of God.

KEEP ON CAROLLING

In other words, the tradition that has developed over the centuries matters more than an unverifiable fact, at least as far as the case of the ox and ass in the stable is concerned.

"I think that what people need to realize here is that the pope is trying to be as historical as he can be," said Father Robert Dodaro, professor of patristics, or the study of early Church writings, at Rome's Patristic Institute.

"He wants to see the biblical narratives as history where possible but he is also trying to explain details in the narratives that cannot be historically verified," he said.

Some bloggers, taking their cue from television and website headlines, even wrote that the pope had spoken out against Christmas carols.

In the book, the opposite was true.

Benedict says the evangelist Luke wrote that at the moment of Jesus' birth the angels "said" the well-known phrase "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased".

But in the next line he explains that "Christianity has always understood that the speech of angels is actually song", that "the angels' song of praise has never gone silent", and that it is "only natural that simple believers (even today) join in their caroling on the Holy Night".

So, no need to cancel any school performances.

Another section of the book that irked some bloggers is where the pope restates what biblical scholars have known for decades, if not centuries - that Jesus was born several years earlier than the first century AD.

Benedict writes that since King Herod died in 4 BC, Jesus was probably born "a few years earlier". He attributes the erroneous fixing of the year of Jesus' birth to a miscalculation by the monk Dionysius Exiguous some 500 years later.

"No one's faith should be shaken by this book," said Dodaro. "On the contrary, it should be fortified by this account. This is a believable account of the birth of Christ," he said.

And in St Peter's Square, workmen have started building the Vatican's larger than life nativity scene, which is expected to have animals and singing angels.

Patent Dispute May Halt BlackBerry Sales

A patent dispute between Nokia and RIM could ban BlackBerry sales.

The dispute centers around a WLAN (wireless local area network) patent owned by Nokia which allows RIM devices to connect to Wi-Fi networks.

RIM licensed a number of standards-essential patents from Nokia in 2003, thinking the patent in question was included in the deal. Nokia, however, did not think the patent was included in the bargain and on Wednesday a Swedish court agreed, ordering RIM to cease manufacturing and selling any WLAN products until it reaches a royalty agreement with Nokia to do so.

Nokia released the following statement explaining the issue:

?Nokia and RIM agreed [on] a cross-license for standards essential cellular patents in 2003, which was amended in 2008. In 2011, RIM sought arbitration, arguing that the license extended beyond cellular essentials. In November, the arbitration tribunal ruled against RIM. It found that RIM was in breach of contract and is not entitled to manufacture or sell WLAN products without first agreeing royalties with Nokia. In order to enforce the Tribunal?s ruling, we have now filed actions in the U.S., UK and Canada with the aim of ending RIM?s breach of contract.?

Regarding the issue, a RIM representative told Mashable, "Research In Motion has worked hard to develop its leading-edge BlackBerry technology and has built an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio of its own. RIM will respond to Nokia's petitions in due course."

With a manufacturing ban in place, RIM will likely expedite an agreement with Nokia to continue to use the patents. The company could also create a workaround for products that do not use Nokia?s WLAN patents, or choose to continue its court battle with the company.

Optimism for BlackBerry 10 -- the newest version of RIM's mobile operating system -- has sent the company's stock soaring over the past 30 days. BlackBerry 10 is expected to be released Jan. 30.

Moody's strips France of AAA-rating

PARIS/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Moody's stripped France of its prized triple-A badge on Monday, cutting the sovereign credit rating on Europe's No. 2 economy by one notch to Aa1 from Aaa, citing an uncertain fiscal outlook and deteriorating economy.

The downgrade, which follows a cut by Standard & Poor's in January, was widely expected but is still a blow to Socialist President Francois Hollande as he strives to convince the world he can fix France's public finances and stalled economy.

Moody's said it was keeping a negative outlook on France due to structural challenges and a "sustained loss of competitiveness" in the country, where business leaders blame high labor charges for flagging exports.

"The first driver underlying Moody's one-notch downgrade of France's sovereign rating is the risk to economic growth, and therefore to the government's finances, posed by the country's persistent structural economic challenges," Moody's said.

"These include the rigidities in labor and services markets, and low levels of innovation, which continue to drive France's gradual but sustained loss of competitiveness and the gradual erosion of its export-oriented industrial base."

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told Reuters the downgrade was a motivation for the 6-month-old Socialist government to pursue reforms, but he noted that even after the S&P downgrade French debt has enjoyed record low yields.

He also said the government was committed to meeting its target of cutting the public debt to 3 percent of economic output next year from an estimated 4.5 percent this year.

The euro slid against the U.S. dollar after the downgrade, by 0.30 percent from nearly a 2-week high to $1.2770, even though analysts said the downgrade was largely factored into bond markets.

The S&P downgrade had little impact on French yields, which have been trading at record lows of just over 2 percent in recent weeks despite the concern about France's sickly economy.

"There is probably more downside until the knee jerk reaction is out of the way. But on the whole it seems likely that this more reflects an existing reality than new information for the market," said Steven Englander, global head of G10 FX strategy at Citi.

REFORMS AHEAD

Moody's had been waiting to examine Hollande's 2013 budget and his response to a review of industrial competitiveness before adjusting its view on France as a sovereign lender.

Standard & Poor's has rated France AA-plus, with a negative outlook, since downgrading it by one notch in January. Fitch Ratings still has France at AAA, also with a negative outlook.

The loss of its Aaa rating from two agencies poses a problem for France, as investment funds often require their best assets to have at least two top notch ratings to remain in their portfolios.

Any rise in borrowing costs will be painful as the French government is already battling to rein in its deficit with potentially painful cuts to public spending.

"France is paying the price for not engaging in reform," said Axel Merk, president of Merk Investments in Palo Alto, California, saying he was not surprised by the downgrade.

With France's 2 trillion euro economy teetering on the brink of recession, Hollande surprised many this month by unveiling measures to spur industrial competitiveness, chief among them the granting of 20 billion euros in annual tax relief to companies, equivalent to a 6 percent cut in labor costs.

The government had already announced 30 billion euros in budget savings next year in an effort to meet its deficit goal and is working on reforms to labor laws to enable companies to hire and fire more easily with economic swings.

French bond yields are close to record lows of just over 2 percent, nearly one percentage point lower than at the time of the S&P downgrade, allowing France to roll over its debt for free, in inflation-adjusted terms.

Analysts expect a limit to any automatic selling by investors whose mandate only allows them to hold AAA bonds.

"The amount of index-driven selling would be near zero. France is fair value relative to other euro-area sovereigns," Morgan Stanley, a primary dealer, wrote in a report last week.

Green Blog: Snow, Sewage and a Fragile Alpine Plant

Weeks before the snow guns at the Arizona Snowbowl ski area are set to begin blowing artificial snow made from sewage effluent ? a focus of a 10-year legal battle ? the Hopi tribe has mounted a new challenge, arguing that the plan could jeopardize the survival of a fragile plant.

Snowbowl sits on national forest land about an hour from the Grand Canyon. Before approving the resort?s snow-making plan, the United States Forest Service conducted a lengthy environmental review and concluded that the fragile alpine tundra would not be adversely affected because endangered and threatened plants would be at a safe distance from the snow guns.

The latest lawsuit, filed last week by the Hopi in federal court in Washington, contends that the review failed to account for the effect that drifting and blowing snow would have on the San Francisco groundsel, which is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Calling this ?a critical oversight,? it seeks a federal injunction requiring the Forest Service to ensure that the wastewater snow is not used.

The San Francisco Peaks groundsel, an ankle-high plant with tiny, yellow flowers that is also known as ragwort, grows only on the San Francisco Peaks. The Hopi say that a review carried out for the tribe by an environmental consulting firm found that ?snow overspray and drift can transport contaminants found in the reclaimed wastewater as well as additional moisture and nutrients.? With moderate winds, the wastewater snow could travel as far as 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), the firm?s report said.

J.R. Murray, Snowbowl?s general manager, described the suit as ?a last-ditch effort to try to stop us? and said that the ski area expected to prevail.

The effort to block the snow-making plan has drawn support from environmental groups. ?Ski area profits aren?t worth the extinction of this lovely little flower,? said Taylor McKinnon, the public lands campaigns director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

As I?ve reported previously, the water used to make the snow, which will be pumped directly from the city of Flagstaff?s sewage treatment plant 14 miles away, contains trace levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals including hormones, antibiotics, antidepressants, pharmaceuticals and steroids as well as antibiotic-resistant genes. There is fierce debate over whether such compounds are harmful to human and environmental health in trace amounts.

Other tactics in the decade-long battle to prevent the snow-making that have included hunger strikes and protests in which activists have chained themselves to bulldozers on the mountain. The Hopi are among 13 Native American tribes that consider the mountain sacred and argue that the wastewater snow will pollute it.

Many ski resorts say that because of a gradual decline in annual snowfall, they need to make artificial snow to stay in business. However, some question whether the snow-making plan ? which involved clear-cutting 74 acres of forest to make room for new lifts, roads, and parking lots ? is a wise use of public land.

For now, Arizona Snowbowl is pressing ahead. ?We?re wrapping up construction and plan to have snow by Christmas,? Mr. Murray said.

Giant Sun Eruption Captured in NASA Video

The sun unleashed a monster eruption of super-hot plasma Friday (Nov. 16) in back-to-back solar storms captured on camera by a NASA spacecraft.

The giant sun eruption, called a solar prominence, occurred at 1 a.m. EST (0600 GMT), with another event flaring up four hours later. The prominences was so large, it expanded beyond the camera view of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which captured high-definition video of the solar eruption.

In the video, a colossal loop of glowing red plasma erupts from the lower left of the sun, arcing up and out of frame as it blasts away from the star.

"The red-glowing looped material is plasma, a hot gas made of electrically charged hydrogen and helium," officials with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, which oversees the SDO mission, explained in a description. "The prominence plasma flows along a tangled and twisted structure of magnetic fields generated by the sun?s internal dynamo. An erupting prominence occurs when such a structure becomes unstable and bursts outward, releasing the plasma."

Friday's solar eruption does not appear to be aimed at Earth, so will likely have little effect on our planet. But that was not the case earlier this week when a powerful solar flare erupted on Monday (Nov. 12). That flare registered as an M6-class eruption, a moderate but still intense solar event.

On Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 13 and 14), space weather conditions sparked a geomagnetic storm that supercharged the Earth's auroras, creating spectacular northern lights displays for observers at high latitudes.

Greeks march to commemorate student uprising

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greeks took to the streets by the tens of thousands on Saturday to commemorate the 39th anniversary of a deadly student uprising against the country's former dictatorship.

While the marches went on peacefully, clashes between anarchists and police erupted briefly in the capital, Athens and Greece's second-largest city of Thessaloniki, in both cases far from where the marches took place. Police announced they detained 70 people in Athens and 19 in Thessaloniki.

With more than 6,000 police deployed in the city center, protesters marched from the National Technical University of Athens, where the 1973 uprising kicked off, to the U.S. Embassy. They were led by students carrying a Greek flag bloodied during the uprising.

Many Greeks hold the U.S. responsible for backing the 1967-1974 dictatorship. Protesters burned a U.S. flag outside the embassy, a yearly ritual.

A separate march by Communist Party supporters later went past the U.S. Embassy.

The Communists had announced their intention to march on to the Israeli Embassy, past the U.S. Embassy, to protest Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Police initially blocked the route at the request of a prosecutor, but after talks with protesters, unblocked it and the march resumed and ended peacefully.

Police say both marches involved about 22,000 people.

In Thessaloniki, about 12,000 people marched, police said. Some burned a European Union flag, angry over EU demands to cut Greek spending in order to get a desperately needed bailout loan.

The student uprising began on Nov. 14, 1973. After violent clashes with police on the 16th, the army intervened and tanks stormed the National Technical University in the early hours of the 17th. There were hundreds of arrests. The dictatorship itself admitted to 12 "accidental" deaths and over a thousand injured. The actual number of dead is disputed but it is agreed that tens died.

While the student uprising failed to overthrow the dictatorship, a coup by army hardliners deposed the dictator, George Papadopoulos, on Nov. 25, 1973. They, in turn, were forced to transfer control to a civilian government in July 1974 when a botched attempt to unify Cyprus with Greece led to Turkey invading the island of Cyprus and to a near-war between Turkey and Greece.

Wal-Mart is taking its first legal step to stop months of protests and rallies outside its?stores, targeting the union that it says is behind such actions.?

Wal-Mart late on Thursday filed an unfair labor practice charge against the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, or UFCW, asking the National Labor Relations Board to halt what the retailer says are unlawful attempts to disrupt its business.?

The move comes just a week before what is expected to be the largest organized action against the world's largest retailer, as a small group of Wal-Mart workers prepare to strike on Black Friday.?

"We are taking this action now because we cannot allow the UFCW to continue to intentionally seek to create an environment that could directly and adversely impact our customers and associates," said Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar. "If they do, they will be held accountable."??

The union is undeterred. "Wal-Mart is grasping at straws," said UFCW Communications Director Jill Cashen. "There's nothing in the law that gives an employer the right to silence workers and citizens."?

Protests and rallies outside Wal-Mart stores around the country and other actions such as flash mobs have been orchestrated by groups including OUR Walmart, a coalition of thousands of Wal-Mart workers which wants to collectively push for better wages, benefits and working conditions.?

OUR Walmart and another group, Making Change at Walmart, are affiliated with the UFCW. The union represents more than 1 million workers, including many at retailers that compete with Wal-Mart. According to a filing with the Labor Department, OUR Walmart was a subsidiary of the UFCW as of 2011. It is unclear whether it remains a subsidiary or has legally separated from the union.?

Numerous activities over the past year or longer "have caused disruptions to Wal-Mart's business, resulted in misinformation being shared publicly about our company, and created an uncomfortable environment and undue stress on Wal-Mart's customers, including families with children," Wal-Mart outside counsel Steven Wheeless said in a letter sent on Friday to Deborah Gaydos, assistant general counsel of the UFCW.?

The National Labor Relations Act prohibits such picketing for more than 30 days without the filing of a representation petition. The NLRA also requires the NLRB to seek a federal court injunction against such activity, the letter states.?

The OUR Walmart group of current and former Wal-Mart employees is organizing its most public displays yet against the Wal-Mart chain, with 1,000 protests such as strikes and what it calls "online actions" that began this week and will culminate on Black Friday.?

Strikes and protests have been planned across the country. For example, workers walked off the job in Seattle on Thursday and in Dallas on Friday as part of this effort, OUR Walmart said.?

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart said that anyone who is not an employee is prohibited from coming onto its owned or controlled parking lots or other facilities to solicit, hand out literature or otherwise engage in any demonstration.?

Wal-Mart said that it intends for the UFCW to be held accountable for any injury or property damage that may occur as a result of the actions led by the UFCW, OUR Walmart or any of its other affiliates.?

"We are prepared to and will take all appropriate legal actions to enforce our property rights, protect our business, and ensure the safety of our customers and associates, on Black Friday and in the future," the letter states.?

OUR Walmart has said that it has thousands of members across most U.S. states, but has not given an exact number of members. Wal-Mart store workers pay $5 monthly dues to join OUR Walmart.?

Wal-Mart has 1.4 million U.S. workers.?

Wal-Mart filed its charge against the UFCW late on Thursday with the NLRB regional office in Little Rock, Arkansas. The case number is 26-CB-093342.?

FDA investigating deaths linked to 5-Hour Energy drink | NOLA.com

WASHINGTON ? Federal health authorities are investigating reports of 13 deaths possibly linked to so-called energy shots and cautioning consumers to talk to their doctors before they take them or other energy drinks.

The Food and Drug Administration has received 92 reports over four years that cite illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths after consumption of a product marketed as 5-Hour Energy. The FDA has also received reports that cited the highly caffeinated Monster Energy Drink in five deaths and one nonfatal heart attack.

Agency officials said the reports to the FDA from consumers, doctors and others don't necessarily prove that the drinks caused the deaths or injuries but said they are investigating each one. In a statement, FDA officials said they will take action if they can link the deaths to consumption of the energy drink. Such action could include forcing the company to take the drinks off the market. They're often found at convenience store checkout counters.

FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said the agency is cautioning consumers that these "energy shots" or "energy drinks" are not alternatives to rest or sleep.

"If someone is thinking about taking one of these products, they should consult with their health care provider to ensure that there are no underlying or undiagnosed medical conditions that could worsen as a result of using them," Burgess said.

The agency doesn't individually regulate caffeinated drinks or supplements such as the energy shots but can take action if they are proven to do harm. Makers of caffeinated alcoholic drinks took those products off the market in 2010 after the FDA sent the companies warning letters saying that combinations of caffeine and alcohol in the drinks was a public health concern and could lead to alcohol poisoning, car accidents and assaults.

5-Hour Energy's small size can also be dangerous to consumers with underlying conditions because it's easier to take several of them or mix them with alcohol. Though it is liquid, the 5-Hour Energy "shot" is marketed not as a drink but as a dietary supplement. FDA regulations require supplement manufacturers themselves to be responsible for products' safety.

A spokeswoman for the manufacturer, Michigan-based Living Essentials, LLC, says 5-Hour Energy is a "compact-sized energy shot intended for busy adults ? it is not an energy drink, nor marketed as a beverage."

Elaine Lutz said the company is not aware of any deaths proven to have been caused by their product. She said the company's website advises consumers to drink no more than two bottles of the shots per day, spaced several hours apart, and for new consumers to drink half a bottle to start.

Democratic Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut went to the Senate floor Thursday to complain about the lack of FDA oversight of energy drinks.

"For God's sake, these are on sale to kids throughout America," Durbin said.

The New York Times first reported that 13 deaths were linked to 5-Hour Energy.

A seven-month joint investigation of the State Attorney?s Office, Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Secret Service has led to 17 people being arrested in an identity theft and bank fraud racket.

State Attorney Angela Corey announced the arrests Thursday with federal officials. Corey said the case originated with an employee of Citibank stealing the identities of customers.

False tax returns were then filed using these false identities.

?I can tell you this case is one of the largest ID thefts we have investigated,? Corey said. ?We found victims that are children, we found victims that are deceased.?

Victims are from across the country, including New York, New Hampshire and Virginia, Corey said.

IRS Special Agent in Charge Jim Robnett said at least 185 people had their identities stolen with about $500,000 in false claims being made and the IRS paying out about $340,000.

The investigation began when VyStar Credit Union noticed multiple tax returns being cashed into single accounts. VyStar also thought it was suspicious that people who didn?t live in the Jacksonville area were depositing their refund checks in these accounts.

Investigators identified Jacksonville resident Larry Bernard Worth, 31, as one of the ringleaders of the plan. Worth was arrested Tuesday and charged with bank fraud. He is accused of recruiting at least three other people to go to VyStar with fraudulent checks and recruiting five VyStar tellers to assist with cashing the checks.

Each teller was paid about $1,000, and the refund checks averaged about $7,500 each, Corey said.

VyStar CEO Terry West said it was disappointing that employees were involved in criminal activity, but the credit union is also proud that its internal controls caught the fraud.

?It doesn?t feel good to have our employees do this,? West said. ?But I want to make clear that none of our members had their identities stolen.?

State Attorney?s Office spokeswoman Jackelyn Barnard said the identity theft occurred at Citibank, not Vystar.

In a statement emailed to the Times-Union, Citibank said it worked with law enforcement after discovering concerns with collections department employee Nanniesha Taliferro, 25, whose boyfriend also was later arrested.

?We also notified those customers who were impacted and closed their accounts to prevent further unauthorized access,? the statement said.

Customers victimized are not liable for any unauthorized charges made to their accounts.

After getting the case from VyStar, investigators identified Latissha Johnson, 35, and Terrance Byrd, 28, as the ones suspected of preparing most of the fake tax returns. After arresting them, police were able to identify others involved.

Assistant State Attorney Joe Licandro said law enforcement has worked diligently to inform all the people whose identities were stolen.

The majority of victims were elderly, but they stole any identification they could get, Licandro said.

In malaria-endemic countries, 350 million people are predicted to be deficient in an enzyme that means they can suffer severe complications from taking primaquine, a key drug for treating relapsing malaria, according to a study funded by the Wellcome Trust and published in this week's PLOS Medicine.

This finding is important as primaquine is recommended in the global action plan to eliminate malaria and is the only drug to prevent malaria relapse. The benefits of implementing a treatment program with this drug need to be weighed against the potential harm to a substantial proportion of the population (up to 8%) who may have G6PD deficiency: a genetic defect reducing glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme activitiy. Individuals with G6PD deficiency who are given primaquine can experience a severe complication ? the breakdown of their red blood cells (hemolysis).

The authors from Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom, led by Rosalind Howes from the University of Oxford, reached these conclusions by inputting information about the frequency of G6PD deficiency from community surveys into a geostatistical model. Using the model, the authors predicted that G6PD deficiency is widespread across malaria-endemic regions, with the lowest frequencies in North and South America and the highest frequency in tropical Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

Dr Howe explains: "Malaria control and elimination are a top priority on the global health agenda. Yet, a key drug to help achieve this goal remains too dangerous for widespread use. We have developed a map of this risk factor, G6PD deficiency, and find it to be very common across many malaria endemic regions. Much work remains to be done to fully understand this disease, notably its genetic diversity."

The authors found that the predicted frequency of G6PD deficiency varied considerably over relatively short distances in many areas but the overall frequency was 8% in malaria-endemic countries, corresponding to about 350 million affected individuals. In countries that are currently planning to implement malaria elimination programs, the frequency was 5.3%, corresponding to 100 million affected individuals.

When the authors took the severity of the G6PD deficiency (the more severe the deficiency, the higher the risk of hemolysis), they found that the greatest risk was across Asia, where severe G6PD variants are commonly inherited.

The authors say: The prominence of G6PD deficiency represents a barrier to current options for malaria elimination therapy."

They continue: "The complexity and diversity of both malaria epidemiology and G6PD deficiency mean that no single solution will be applicable for ensuring safe and effective primaquine treatment."

Dr Oz: Zucchini Hungry Girl Carb Expander

Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien says a great way to expand your favorite meat dishes is to replace part of the meat with Portobello Mushrooms. They offer a similar meaty texture, but have far fewer calories.

Zucchini ? Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien says she loves zucchini as a carb expander because it is delicious and also very versatile.

• Potato Skin ? Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien says this might be her favorite carb expander recipe. She says instead of using potatoes, cut up some zucchini and add all of the same ingredients (low-fat of course) that you love in your usual potato skin recipe, but instead it is with zucchini.
  
• Fettuccine Alfredo ? This by far is one of the most loved recipes, according to Lisa Lillien. You still use pasta, but replace half of it with zucchini that is sliced to appear like noodles and you still have a delicious dish that has fewer calories, or as Lisa calls it Zucchinicine. I can personally say that I have done this myself and it tasted amazing and it was a huge hit with my entire family.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Detroit's Miguel Cabrera won the American League's Most Valuable Player award on Thursday after becoming baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, and San Francisco's Buster Posey was voted the National League honor.

Cabrera received 22 of 28 first-place votes and 362 points from the AL panel of Baseball Writers' Association of America to easily beat out Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout, who had six firsts and 281 points. Trout was voted AL Rookie of the Year earlier in the week.

Posey recovered from a devastating leg injury that cut short his 2011 season, became the first catcher in 70 years to win the NL batting title and helped San Francisco win its second World Series title in three seasons. He got 27 of 32 firsts and 422 points from the NL panel, outdistancing 2011 winner Ryan Braun of Milwaukee, who was second with 285 points.

Cabrera hit .330 with 44 homers and 139 RBIs to become the first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. The last four Triple Crown winners have been voted MVP, including Mickey Mantle in 1956 and Frank Robinson in 1966.

Cabrera also led the league with a .606 slugging percentage for the AL champion Tigers. He became the second straight Detroit player voted MVP, following Justin Verlander in 2011, and was the first Venezuelan to earn the honor.

Before the season, he switched from first base to third to make way for Prince Fielder, signing as a free agent.

The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, Posey set career highs with a .336 average, 24 homers and 103 RBIs for the World Series champion Giants. His 2011 season was cut short by a collision with the Marlins' Scott Cousins on May 25 that resulted in a fractured bone in Posey's lower left leg and three torn ankle ligaments.

Posey, the fifth overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft, won the NL batting title after teammate Melky Cabrera requested a rules change that disqualified him. Cabrera, who hit .346, missed the final 45 games of the regular-season while serving a suspension for a positive testosterone test and would have won the batting crown if the rule hadn't been changed.

Ernie Lombardi had been the previous catcher to capture the NL batting championship, in 1942.

Catchers have won the NL MVP just eight times, with Posey joining Gabby Hartnett (1935), Lombardi (1938), Roy Campanella (1951, 1953, 1955) and Johnny Bench (1970, 1972). The other winning catchers were Lombardi in 1938 and Gabby Hartnett in 1935.

Posey is the first Giants player to win since Barry Bonds was voted his record seventh MVP award in 2004.

Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen (245) was third, followed by St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina (241).

NOTES: In his first season with the Angels, Albert Pujols didn't finish among the top 10 for the first time in his career. While with St. Louis, he won three times, was second four times and also finished third, fourth, fifth and ninth.
