10 things you never knew about the North Pole

9 hrs.

Say "North Pole" and most people think of Santa, but did you know that the region is a hotbed for international intrigue? Or that it has a special connection to the unicorn? Just in time for Christmas, here are 10 fun facts about the most mythical place on earth.

There's more to the North Pole than just snow and Santa. Ever since it was discovered by Robert E. Peary, Matthew Henson, and four Eskimo companions back in 1909, the North Pole has been a place of international intrigue???did you know several countries are now fighting over vast underground oil reserves in the Arctic Circle? You can go see for yourself with expedition voyages or even spend the night in a hotel made entirely of ice???try the IceHotel in Jukkasj?rvi, Sweden, or stay overnight at the Aurora Ice Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska, for a unique twist on the average igloo.?

Here, 10 more facts about the North Pole that may surprise you:

There are two North Poles
Unlike the South Pole, which lies over the continent of Antarctica, there is no land beneath the North Pole but more of a floating Arctic ice sheet that expands during colder months and shrinks to half its size in the summer. To complicate things even more, there are two different definitions of the North Pole. The first is the north magnetic pole, which is, quite literally, a magnetic phenomenon which changes daily depending on changes under the Earth's crust. Additionally, there is a north terrestrial pole, which is the fixed point that references the top of the Earth. Regardless of how you define the North Pole, global warming continues to be a problem here???as the polar ice caps melt, the sea levels rise, eliminating the land that polar bears and other wildlife depend on for survival.?

It's at the center of an international controversy right now
Did you know 30 percent of the world's untapped oil reserves are located in the Arctic Circle? The U.S. Geological Survey says that amount could actually be higher, since so much of the region has yet to be explored. Complicating matters is the fact that multiple countries lay claim to the Arctic Circle???Russia, Canada, Norway, Denmark (via Greenland), and the United States (via Alaska). Each country is allowed to explore potential oil reserves within 200 miles of their coastlines, but in 2007, Russia used a mini-submarine to plant the country's flag on the floor of the Arctic Ocean in an attempt to claim the region and its natural resources, a move that was rejected by the U.N. as the countries continue to work toward a solution.?

The North Pole has seasons
Just like everywhere else on Earth, the temperature varies here depending on the time of year. The North Pole is warmest in July, if by warm you mean it's actually freezing???32 degrees. If that gives you the shivers, brace yourself. Temperatures in February drop to a bone-chilling 31 degrees below zero. The amount of light each day depends on the time of year, too. Alaska as well as Norway and the other Arctic Circle countries each face six months of broad daylight and six months of almost total darkness because of the angle at which this top portion of the Earth receives sunlight.?

More from Budget Travel:

Yet, it is not the coldest place in the world
It might come as a shock, but even with temperatures with a high of just 32 degrees, the North Pole is not the coldest place on Earth. The South Pole is (in winter temperatures average -76 degrees F). Unlike the North Pole, the South Pole sits on top of a thick sheet of ice, which in turn sits on top of a piece of land???Antarctica. At more than 9,000 feet above sea level, Antarctica is also the world's tallest continent. The North Pole, on the other hand, is made up of a thin Arctic ice sheet that sits barely a foot above sea level???a fact that allows the landscape to absorb heat from the surrounding Arctic Ocean.?

There is life up there
While the conditions may be considered too tough for most humans, there are native Inuit tribes living in northern Canada and Alaska. The outer reaches of the Arctic Circle are a great place to see polar bears in the wild. Keep an eye out for other Arctic dwellers like Orca, Humpback, and Beluga whales, the arctic fox, and Svalbard reindeer. This isn't the only place to see reindeer in the world; a reindeer herd in the U.K. inhabits the Cairngorm Mountains of northern Scotland. One animal you won't see in the North Pole is the penguin. They live in the South Pole. Several species of flying penguin-like birds called auks, guillemots, and puffins can be seen in the Arctic Circle, though.?

Santa Claus is not the only legendary character in the North Pole
Did you know that the creature that inspired myths about unicorns comes from the North Pole? The narwhal, a small whale that lives in the chilly waters of the Arctic Circle, has a six-to-10-foot long tusk, a trait that earned it the nickname "unicorn of the sea." Back in the 16th century, they were often believed to possess magical powers that could be used to cure diseases. Demand was high, and legend has it that Queen Elizabeth I shelled out 10,000 pounds to get her hands on her very own narwhal tusk. Nowadays, narwhal populations are on the decline, due to hunting (Inuit peoples use the meat, tusks, and vitamin-C-rich skin in their everyday lives), climate change, and fishing for halibut, their main source of food.?

Santa's magical workshop isn't in the North Pole proper???but it is nearby
Shh! Don't tell the kids, but Santa's Workshop isn't really in the North Pole???it's in Finnish Lapland. You can visit Santa Claus Village in the Finnish town of Rovaniemi year round, send letters to and from his post office (they'll bear the official postmark of the Arctic Circle), and spend time exploring Santa Park, a series of Christmas-themed caves where you can meet jolly old St. Nick and his elves. You can even visit Santa's reindeer at the onsite Sirmakko Reindeer Family Farm. If Finnish Lapland seems a little out of reach, Santa also has a satellite workshop in the holiday-themed town of North Pole, Alaska where the streets have names like Kris Kringle, Mistletoe, Donner, and Blitzen.

If you would rather write to Santa than visit his workshops, the U.S. Postal Service will postmark letters from Santa Claus as long as they are received by December 10th each year. Simply mail your letters to North Pole Postmark Postmaster, 41-41 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99530 with "Santa, North Pole" marked as the return address. If time is of the essence, you can always email Santa??he'll answer it right away. On Christmas Eve, use the Santa Tracker North Pole Command Center app ($1.99) to keep an eye on Santa's progress.?

You can vacation there
While not exactly a budget destination, you can embark on your own Arctic adventure. Quark Expeditions offers a wide variety of cruising expeditions ranging from the Spitsbergen Explorer, an 11-day cruise around the Norwegian island (from $4,995 per person) to The Ultimate Arctic Adventure, which sails from Russia to the 90-degree north spot that represents the North Pole, visits Franz Josef Land, and tours the Arctic Ocean (from $23,995 per person). Go from June to mid-July to see the polar bears and walrus hunting in their own natural habitat, from mid-July to mid-August to see flowers and other arctic flora in bloom, or from mid-August to September as birds begin to migrate South.

There?are hot springs up there
If you are in the frigid Arctic Circle, you'll need to find a way to warm up.?Chena Hot Springs, located about an hour outside Fairbanks has a natural geothermal hot spring in a rock lake surrounded by nature. The hot springs are open from 7 a.m. to midnight, giving you plenty of time to soak and get a front row seat for the Aurora Borealis (best viewed between August and May). You can also stay at the Chena Hot Springs Resort ($65 a night to room in a Mongolia-style yurt, or stay in a room at the resort for from $189 a night). A number of hot springs can also be found in Norway's Svalbard Islands, in Iceland (the Landmannalaugar Hot Springs is well-known), and in Russia??? Scientific American profiled the hot springs in Oymyakon, Siberia, the coldest town on Earth.?

There is a North Pole marathon every year
The North Pole Marathon bills itself as the World's Coolest Marathon, and with an average wind chill temperature of 22 degrees below zero, they'd be right. It's happened every year since 2002???in 2011, 255 people from 38 nations around the world braved the conditions to compete in the 26.2-mile marathon race on top of a floating Arctic ice shelf. Competitors are transported to an international North Pole Camp on the polar ice shelf to start the race. And they layer up-thermal layers, windproof pants, gloves, two pairs of socks, and even goggles are necessary. The next North Pole Marathon takes place on April 9, 2013, and costs a pretty penny???about $15,561 for the entry fee that includes accommodations in Spitsbergen, Greenland, before and after the race, flights to and from the North Pole Camp, helicopter flights within the polar region, medals, and a commemorative DVD of the race. But the bragging rights are priceless.

Flights hit again as winter weather continues

Extreme weather created delays across much of the country in the run-up to Christmas Day, with canceled flights and congested roads. While travel disruptions were mostly remedied by Saturday, the West Coast may be feeling the effects of bad weather soon as a storm system moves toward the region. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

By Ian Johnston, NBC News

While not as severe as the two previous days, air travel delays caused by a wintry mix of snow, high winds and heavy rain continued across the country Saturday, while some areas were expecting up to a foot of snow by day's end.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings Saturday for parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and Ohio on the East Coast and also parts of Northern California and Oregon on the West Coast.

As of 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday, more than 6,300 flights had been delayed and 144 were canceled, according to the website FlightStats.com.

Chicago?s O?Hare International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were the most impacted, according to the website?s figures.

On Friday, nearly 900 flights were canceled and 13,500 delayed across the country, FlightStats reported.

Weather.com said the storm was likely to linger over northern New England during the weekend.

?Winds will be the most intense from parts of southern New England and New York to the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday,? it said.??Farther to the west, the Great Lakes snowbelts and Appalachians will continue to see wind-whipped snow on Saturday.?

After extreme weather upset travel plans in the last few days, the forecast on the horizon seems ready for Santa, with a possible dusting of snow expected in some parts of the country. TODAY's Dylan Dreyer reports.

It warned people in those areas to be prepared for winter driving conditions with ?sudden reductions in visibility? due to the weather possible.

On Thursday, two people were killed and seven injured in a 30-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35 in Iowa. Drivers were blinded by blowing snow and didn't see vehicles that had slowed or stopped, causing a chain reaction of crashes, state police said.

Thousands of flights disrupted across US as storm hits Northeast

The storm was also blamed for traffic deaths in three other states: two deaths each in Nebraska and Wisconsin; and one in Kansas.

In Utah, a woman who tried to walk for help after her car became stuck in snow died Tuesday night.

The West Coast was also seeing stormy weather.

The NWS said several inches of rain along with several feet of snow in elevated areas were expected in California and Oregon this weekend.

Disappointing coming from King James. But I guess after the 'Beautiful' ad, it's hard to maintain that level of brilliance.

The copy is fine, but ultimately the length of it serves little purpose. Why have long copy? Does it help the idea along in any way?

I'll hazard a guess that you could develop far more interesting creative solutions for a product like crunch time.

First Unreal Engine 3 game gets honesttogoodness Linux port

Who gives the official all-clear after the End of the World? We have no idea, but soon as the happy signal comes we're going to reconfigure our Linux-powered bunker for a spot of gaming. It's an eerily fortuitous time for that, in fact, what with the Steam for Linux beta now open to all and the Unity and Unreal engines also having been adapted for the open source OS. In terms of actual playable titles, Dungeon Defenders in the latest Humble Bundle is being put forward as the first native, commercial Linux game to use Unreal Engine 3, and if it proves successful then it'll hopefully inspire others to come out with more ports in lucky 2013.

Michigan could help protect online passwords

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan legislation aimed at prohibiting employers from asking job applicants and employees for online passwords and other account information could become law.

Republican state Rep. Aric Nesbitt of Lawton sponsored a House bill that was approved last week. He says it also would prohibit educational institutions from asking for private account information and would penalize them for dismissing or failing to accept students who don't provide such details.

The aim is to help protect access to personal Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts.

Nesbitt's office says the bill was sent to the desk of Gov. Rick Snyder. A message was sent Wednesday morning seeking comment from Snyder's office.

WR DeMarcus Robinson drops Florida, returns to Clemson commitment

Published Tuesday, Dec 18, 2012 at 11:16 am EST Last updated 2 hours and 43 minutes ago

Maybe it?s because it?s chillier in winter, but for whatever reason, college football recruits tend to get cold feet this time of the year.

Some may have been committed to a school nearly a year ago, but when it gets down to the last couple of weeks, they begin second guessing their decisions. On Monday, DeMarcus Robinson ended his commitment to Florida?one that lasted less than a week?and went back to his commitment to Clemson.

Robinson is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound wide receiver?a position of need for the Gators. He has taken official visits to both schools and Notre Dame since the beginning of November.

The Fort Valley (Ga.) native is apparently a very torn teenager, which isn?t surprising. He plays at Peach County High School.

?Right now, he is a flustered young man,? Peach County coach Chad Campbell told TigerNet.com, ?He has two great schools to choose from, and he doesn?t know what he wants to do. He is supposed to be in school before the end of the month. It is weighing on him, and he is torn between two places. He has a great relationship with the coaches at one school, and the other has the mystique of the SEC.?

Robinson plans to enroll early at the school he chooses, so his decision is coming down to the last couple of days, not weeks, like the regular February signees. Robinson wants to be on campus in January.

As a senior, Robinson caught 47 passes for 957 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a junior, he caught 53 passes for 1,024 yards and 10 TDs.

AT&T scores WCS spectrum victory, covers 608 markets and 82 percent of Americans

The wireless landscape shifted a bit today, as the FCC has made good on its promise to allow AT&T's deployment of LTE service over the WCS band. In all, the regulatory agency approved Ma Bell's acquisition of licenses to the underutilized 2.3GHz spectrum from Comcast, Horizon, NextWave and San Diego Gas and Electric, along with additional AWS spectrum from NextWave. The licenses cover 82 percent of the population across 608 markets within the continental US. If you're an AT&T subscriber, however, don't expect to benefit from the deal overnight. By the carrier's own admission, it'll take at least three years to build up the proper infrastructure and introduce devices that support WCS, which means you're likely to go through a new iPhone or two between now and then. In the meantime, feel free to soak in the nitty gritty details at the source.

Crafty Day 2012: Food, Drink, Crafts, and Friends! ? It's just the ...

Vanilla Extract

The last time the holiday gathering that we call Crafty Day?was written about on this blog was way back in December of 2010. That is not to say that we didn?t celebrate Crafty Day in 2011, I just never got around to writing about it.

In a nutshell, our good friends Patty and Rob invite us to their home for an afternoon and evening filled with food, drink, crafts, and most important of all, quality time spent with some of our oldest and dearest friends. Since Patty and Rob are kind enough to host and let us make a mess of their lovely home, it is my job to always bring a wide assortment of food for lunch. My annual trip to the Reading Terminal Market and our local Italian grocery store (Croce?s in Cherry Hill, NJ) to gather provisions for Crafty Day is a shopping excursion that I always look forward to.

For this year?s event, the Women of Crafty Day (Patty, her sister Sue, and Mrs. G-LO) decided that they would be making homemade Vanilla Extract, which would prove to be one of the easiest crafts that the ladies have ever undertaken. Take four vanilla bean pods. Split them. Stuff them into an 8 ounce Boston Round bottle. Fill the bottle with Vodka. Wait two months. And then Voila! The Vanilla Extract, she is done! I am really looking forward to seeing how it came out (once again, I am a sucker for pretty packaging).

While the ladies were toiling in the kitchen, the boys (Rob, Sue?s husband Rash, and I) were working on this year?s batch of Limoncello while we sampled a wide array of whiskies (I brought the Balcones, Brenne, Angel?s Envy, and a Scotch Malt Whisky Society sample since I knew they would be something new for the boys to try). Crafty Rob (he makes his own wine and occasionally homebrews) supplied us with vegetable peelers and quickly put us to work as we imbibed. Thankfully, no fingers were lost as we peeled our lemons and drank our drinks. Our next gathering will hopefully involve the dilution and bottling of Rob?s lemon peel and Everclear concoction.

At around 6PM, we did what all good gluttons do after an afternoon of eating and drinking: we ordered a plethora of Asian food! Wonton soup. Dumplings. Sushi. Spare Ribs. A medley of stir fries. If you can think of it, it was probably there! At this point in the evening, we also stopped with the adult libations and moved on to the lighter side of the beverage spectrum, i.e. lots of water and a caffeinated soda or two, because once the party is over, we still have an hour long drive home.

Once again, Crafty Day was a huge success, and fun was had by all. We are already counting down to next year?s event!

And for your viewing pleasure, here are some photos of all that went down on that rainy, foggy Saturday in early December. Happy Holidays!

Israel pushes on with east Jerusalem building plan

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel on Monday said it was pushing forward with plans to build hundreds of homes in a Jewish settlement of east Jerusalem, risking renewed tensions with the Palestinians and its Western allies over the contentious project.

The announcement was part of a new Israeli settlement push announced earlier this month as retaliation for the Palestinians' success in winning U.N. recognition for a state at the United Nations. Israel was widely criticized internationally for the settlement plans, though actual construction would be far in the future.

An Interior Ministry committee on Monday approved an intermediate stage of planning for the construction of 1,500 apartments in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood, a part of the city Palestinians claim for a future capital. The plan had been in the pipeline since it was first announced in 2010 during a visit to Israel by Vice President Joe Biden, causing a major diplomatic rift with Washington that took months to mend.

Ministry spokeswoman Efrat Orbach said the project still must go through several additional planning stages, and it could be years before final approval and construction.

Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the move, calling it a "stark challenge to the entire international community."

There was no immediate American reaction.

Israel announced plans early this month to build thousands of settlement homes, including in Ramat Shlomo, in response to the U.N. General Assembly's recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. The U.S., Israel's closest ally, condemned the construction plans, and several European allies summoned Israeli ambassadors to lodge formal protests.

Israel strongly objected to the Palestinian's U.N. bid, saying it was an attempt to bypass negotiations. Israel rejects a return to its 1967 lines.

Israel annexed east Jerusalem following the 1967 war and claims the area, home to sensitive Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy sites, as an inseparable part of its capital. The Palestinians also claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their hoped-for state. About 200,000 Jews and roughly 250,000 Palestinians live in east Jerusalem.

While Israelis consider its east Jerusalem enclaves to be neighborhoods like others in the city, the international does not recognize Israel's annexation of the area and rejects the sections as illegal or illegitimate settlements.

Abbas has refused to negotiate with Israel so long as settlement construction continues, leading to a four-year lull in talks. Abbas has said that a stalemate in talks urged him to turn to the U.N.

Support is growing for his political opponents, Gaza's militant Islamic Hamas rulers, following eight days of fighting with Israel last month. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh might defeat Abbas if an election were held today for the presidency, according to a poll published Monday by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research.

The survey said Haniyeh would receive 48 percent of the Palestinian vote and 46 percent for Abbas, a virtual tie. Just three months ago, Abbas received the support of 51 percent and Haniyeh 40 percent.

The poll surveyed 1,270 Palestinians and had a margin of error of three percentage points.

No. 1 Notre Dame has underdog in its DNA

(AP) ? The rankings say Notre Dame is No. 1 going into the BCS championship against Alabama. Plenty of folks aren't buying it, starting with the oddsmakers who currently have the Crimson Tide as about a touchdown favorite for the Jan. 7 meeting in Miami between two of college football's proudest programs.

The Fighting Irish aren't sweating the point spread. In fact, it's pretty much business as usual for Notre Dame, which has a chance to become the first team since 1984 to start the season unranked and end it as national champions.

"Everybody thought everybody was better than us," defensive tackle Louis Nix III said Monday. "Oklahoma was better than us. USC was better than us.

"We get it. We know how everyone thinks. We're just Notre Dame. Overrated Notre Dame. No one gives us credit for anything. Just the luck of the Irish, I guess."

History suggests that being the underdog in the BCS title game hasn't been a bad thing. Of the 14 BCS championship games played since the system was implemented in 1998, seven have been won by the underdog.

Alabama was a slight underdog last year after losing to LSU in the regular season, and then shut out the Tigers with the national title on the line.

In the 2005 championship game between Texas and Southern California, Vince Young and the Longhorns felt as if they were being talked about as nothing more than a speed bump on the road to USC's coronation as one of the greatest teams in college football history. Plus, Young was still seething over coming in second to USC's Reggie Bush in the Heisman Trophy voting.

The result: Texas 41, USC 38, and a performance for the ages by Young.

The following season, Ohio State reached the national championship game with a perfect record, No. 1 ranking and a Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Troy Smith. Florida was the Buckeyes opponent and the question was: Did the Gators even belong in game?

Urban Meyer, the Gators' coach, made sure his players got that message. Even if it meant stretching the truth a bit. After a month of being told that nobody thought they had a chance to beat Ohio State, the Gators routed the Buckeyes 41-14 to start the Southeastern Conference's run of six straight BCS championships.

It's impossible to quantify what, if any, effect being the underdog has actually had on any of those "upsets." Any team that gets to a championship game must be good in the first place.

Whether Notre Dame can or will use the slights ? real or perceived ? as motivation remains to be seen.

"I've used the technique before during my time as a head coach," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said about playing the underdog card. "I don't know that that is pertinent because it's a one-game deal. It's all or nothing.

"Both teams have different dynamics to deal with because of the long layoff. Preparation is more important than any kind of fire and brimstone speech that I can bring to them."

Offensive coordinator Chuck Martin said the coaches don't even need to bring it up. The Fighting Irish have played all season like a team with something to prove.

"I think it's a little bit part of our kids' DNA now," he said. "We don't have to use it as much as maybe early in the year when we went on the road to Michigan State and they were ranked eighth and nobody was thinking we were very good. I think we've kind of just built it into who we are. Everybody likes telling us what we're not good at ? which is fine by us. One of our strengths is knowing what we're not very good at. We try to play to our strengths and play away from our weaknesses."

It's a style that has led to more than a few close calls on the way to Miami.

Notre Dame beat Purdue and BYU by three points each. The Irish needed three overtimes to beat Pittsburgh by a field goal and went to overtime against Stanford, too. In both the Pitt and Stanford games, Notre Dame caught a few breaks. A missed field goal here, a questionable call by the officials there.

Meanwhile, except for its upset loss to Texas A&M, Alabama has rarely been challenged on its way to a third BCS title game appearance in the past four seasons.

The Tide is outscoring its opponents by an average of 28 points per game. Notre Dame's average margin of victory is 16 points per game, as the Irish have leaned on Heisman Trophy finalists Manti Te'o and a stellar defense while they developed first-year starting quarterback Everett Golson.

"I understand why people say Alabama's going to win," said Nix, the 325-pound anchor of Notre Dame's defensive front. "Great offensive line. Good quarterback. Great guys on the edge. They've been in the national championship twice in the last three years. I would probably pick Alabama, too.

"At the end of the day it's all about what's on the scoreboard."

One of the most important responsibilities of a small business owner is accounting. Efficient accounting can mean the difference between saving potentially thousands of dollars, or losing funds without really understanding why. Some business owners utilize the services of an external accountant to handle the business? accounting needs, but if you choose to do it yourself, you might want to read these tips, designed to help you improve efficiency and save money.

1. Be Organized

In order to ensure efficient and proper accounting, you need to make sure you have everything properly organized, from receipts to expense reports to invoices to weekly payouts of salaries. Organize all items in a filing cabinet, using a thorough system that makes it easy to find exactly what you are looking for, when you need to find it. Don?t just simply stuff everything into one folder?keep receipts separate from utility bills, and so forth.

Advanced accounting software is extremely cost-effective. Provided you consistently enter information into the software in a timely fashion, you?ll be able to keep track of absolutely every penny and quickly find information with a few clicks of the mouse.

2. Use Cash

When using cash, you?ll typically only have to file receipts. Additionally, deposit cash into your account right away so that it can recorded and counted quickly.

96% Sister

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (48) | Rotten (2)

"Sister" avoids sentimental indulgence. There's no room for wallowing in this spare, almost ascetic exercise ...

French-born director and co-screenwriter Ursula Meier balances the scenario's bleak, wrenching aspects with a stirring confidence in the redemptive power of love.

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.

L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.

Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.

The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.

The storytelling is exciting and the characters well-observed.

For the most part a distant film, Sister supplies a full behavioral experience that's riveting at times, with lead performances by Lea Seydoux and Kacey Mottet Klein communicating isolation in bravely vulnerable ways.

Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted

Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.

"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.

[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.

Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...

It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.

Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.

An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.

Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.

Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.

An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.

A healthy seam of mischief helps cut through the occasionally rote social comment.

Choose A Vehicle From Sydney Auto Auctions - SponsorDirectory.com

Having no car of your own may make commuting harder, especially when your house is located not even close to the places you typically go to. Public transit is frequently reliable, but presently there are times when speed is required. There?s also occasions when you intend to go on road trips, off-the-beaten-path vacations, camping, and more. A car is unquestionably needed. Go to auto action company in sydney rather than setting up appointments with vehicle sellers.

Public auctions offer different types of cars, trucks, and other types of automobiles. They could be found in Sydney and other cities where the need for inexpensive yet high-quality cars is high. Second-hand cars are sold here, however they are usually costing very affordable rates, which are lower than what you can usually find in car dealerships and distributors. Great deals, especially choice ones, are the order of the day, for auctions offer reclaimed automobiles. These vehicles are confiscated from owners who were not capable of paying the premiums on the time agreed upon. There are also cars from rental businesses which substitute their fleets once a year. This makes late-model cars available at affordable rates, that may be very appealing for individuals searching for stylish cars.

Business owners and contractors also experience the same problem as private individuals, although at a different context. They face difficulties to find the right equipment at a price they can afford. A few may recognize that buying new equipment is within their means but not practical in the long run. This may cause auto auctions amenable for all those involved in the construction, hauling, earthmoving, and other sectors. Auctions can save them a lot of money and provide them with used yet good tools they could use for a long period.

This makes it common practice for many organizers to take the time in ensuring that the fleets of trucks and cars they are selling are in full condition. Most make it their goal to be able to reassure new and existing clients that their inventory has reputable quality. In addition, they seek to provide clients with various choices of cars, which could ultimately help clients discover the car or truck that suits their demands. Savvy executives of auto auction companies will get in contact with their acquaintances in the industry to provide wide selections.

Choosing the right auto auction company and learning how to decide on a car in this kind of an event can often be difficult without correct guidance from experienced buyers. See the Internet for tips and go to some auto auctions to see how the process is done. This may coach you well on how to select the right which will fit your specifications. Examine internet sites of auto auctioneer companies such as www.Pickles.com.au to get ideas on the trucks and cars offered. This can also help give a bird?s eye view on how they start the bidding. Look at different sites to see which company is suitable for your car purchasing needs.

Pakistan Taliban now on Facebook

Islamabad: It?s a world of likes, apps and status updates, so it was bound to happen: The Pakistani Taliban now has its own Facebook page.

The Pakistani insurgent group?s spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, confirmed that it had put a page called Umar Media TTP on the social media website. TTP is the acronym for Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, the group?s name in Urdu. Formed in 2007, the Pakistani Taliban is an amalgam of factions united by the goal of toppling the government and imposing Shariah, or Islamic law.

The Pakistani Taliban maintains links with Al Qaida, the Afghan Taliban and other Pakistani militant groups entrenched in their country?s tribal belt. Authorities in Islamabad have accused the Pakistani Taliban of engineering some of the country?s worst terrorist strikes, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December 2007. The group also claimed responsibility for the October 9 attempt to kill Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old Pakistani girl who had defied the Taliban?s attempts to deny girls an education.

The use of websites and social media sites by militant groups has become increasingly common in recent years, as they try to spread their message and cast a wider net for potential recruits. Al Qaida is particularly active on the Internet, and Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a Pakistani group that the US says acts as a front for the militant organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba, maintains a page on Facebook. Jamaat-ud-Dawa?s leader, Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, is Lashkar-e-Taiba?s founder and is widely viewed in the West and in India as the alleged mastermind behind the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people.

Article continues below

Agence France-Presse news service quoted the US-based SITE Intelligence group, which monitors militant activities on the Internet, as saying the Pakistani Taliban is using its Facebook presence as a recruiting tool. As of Friday evening, the Pakistani Taliban?s Facebook page had 281 ?likes.? Its latest post invites visitors to become contributors to a new quarterly magazine the group is publishing called Ahyah-e-Khilafat, or Sign of the Caliphate. ?Pen is mightier than the sword. Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon,? the post states. ?Would you like to be a writer for Ahyah-e-Khilafat? You can write to us on the topic of your choice, or on jihadi current affairs, history, Islamic movements? or the plight of Muslims.

Significant Risk from Online 'Legal Highs' | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 7, 2012

Significant Risk from Online Legal HighsA new UK study finds that recreational drug users may be putting their health at risk by ingesting substances purchased legally via the Internet.

Although policymakers are attempting to limit the availability of drug products, substances marketed as plant food or bath salts are still being sold online. Common products include mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine class marketed as plant food and cathinones, marketed as bath salts.

In a study, published in the British Medical Journal, University of Leicester researchers John Bond, M.D., and Tammy Ayres, Ph.D., analyzed the constituents of 22 products marketed as research chemicals. The chemicals were marketed as plant food or bath salts and were purchased from five different Internet sites.

Researchers are concerned about the legality and safety of the substances and the potential impact these synthetic substances may be having on public health and the criminal justice system.

Their findings illustrate that illegal cathinones are still being sold online as legal alternatives to illegal substances ? a fact also used as a marketing tool by the suppliers in this research.

?Recreational drug use has changed to include a range of substances sold as ?research chemicals? and ?plant food? but known by users as ?legal highs? ? legal alternatives to the most popular illicit recreational drugs,? said Ayers.

?The number of new legal highs appearing on the market is continuing to grow and the number of online shops selling these substances has trebled since 2010.

?This raises concerns over the health of those buying and taking these substances as little is known about their long term affects. There are only a handful of studies that have bought and tested legal highs available to purchase off the internet for banned cathinones.

?This research demonstrates that drugs cannot be legislated out of existence and illustrates that prohibiting these substances does not stop their supply or their use.?

Gaming the criminal justice system is not new, said?Bond.

?Products are frequently given new names and marketed as superior, but legal, alternatives to the banned substances they purport to replace. It is not known how many of these new products contain newly synthesized and legal chemicals and how many continue to contain illegal substances like mephedrone, which has been linked to a number of deaths.?

Bond is concerned that ingestion of the substances may compromise the ability of health care providers to help in an emergency.

?Health professionals have a complete lack of knowledge about the short- and long-term effects these substances have on those presenting themselves at GP?s surgeries or hospitals. Even if they take the packaging with them, there is nothing on it to assist in understanding what it is that the patient has taken,? he said.

?These substances are not legal, it is simply that the companies selling them purport them to be harmless and legal when the opposite is true.?
