In the end, Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats, took second billing to the double no-hitter fashioned by both teams.
Roseville won the game 2-0 with unearned runs in both the first and fourth innings but the outcome is almost beside the point. Thanks to Pioneer pitchers Robert Daugherty (four innings) and Thomas Galart (three innings) and Roseville pitcher Mark Reece, who went the distance, neither squad had a base hit in the seven-inning affair.
"When you think you've seen everything something else pops up," Pioneer head coach Craig Marquez said.
"It's crazy. I told the kids the three arms (opposing pitchers) we've seen this year are probably three of the best arms in the area. It was fun to watch but you're pulling your hair out at the same time."
Pioneer (1-2) entered the night having scored 12 runs in the final three innings of a 13-12 loss to Sheldon of Sacramento on Tuesday. On Thursday Reece, a 6-foot-5 senior, allowed no such fireworks.
"He's very solid as far as location -- first-pitch strikes all over the place," Marquez said. "We only struck out seven times. He was just very effective. Threw hard, too."
Daugherty and Galart, meanwhile, had seven strikeouts each. It was Daugherty's first pitching start of the season and Gallart's second appearance following his starting effort Saturday in a
win over Rodriguez of Fairfield."Daugherty was pretty much himself. He went deep into some counts but when he needed to make a pitch he did," Marquez said.
"Galart is just an animal right now. He's throwing whatever he wants whenever he wants."
Marquez said his players were a bit wide-eyed upon entering Raley Field on Thursday but added that the venue had nothing to do with he hitting issues both teams had. Pioneer's junior varsity had little trouble hitting on the same field earlier in the day during an 8-5 defeat of Roseville.
"We hit some balls hard but they played really good defense too," Marquez said.
"It was just a very well-pitched game where you had to scrap and get a few runs. It was fun to watch but you wanted to be on the winning side."
