The noise is caused by the vibration with the soft tissues with the throat. More noise means more obstruction within the throat. Snoring affects nearly 1 / 2 of the adult's population with increased men are affected than women. You can have many causes, in order that not all anti snoring devices benefit everyone. The reasons may be:

Structural - A narrow jaw, large tongue, tonsils, adenoids, thick soft palate, small valve or perhaps a crooked septum. The tongue and upper throat fulfill the soft palate and uvula blocking the airway

External causes - allergies, excessive use of alcohol, sedatives, smoking, disruption of normal sleep patterns or decreased lung capacity (can be caused by obesity)

A spokesman for snoring (dental implants) may work for some people, but some find them uncomfortable enough to prevent going to sleep.

Some implants work to pull the jaw forward, others restrict the word what to avoid falling into the airway. The greater expensive ones is going to be more comfortable and durable. Cheaper may only last a year or so. There is concern that folks who carry these units are unable to swallow, causing them to be unsuitable for many snorers.

As you can see the results vary. It is sometimes a matter of personal preference

Simply speaking, the stop snoring exercises help most snorers who've tried. Luckily, they merely take a couple of minutes a day and therefore are very easy. Infinity Blade: Epic Games profit tops console games

Infinity Blade Epic Games Profit

On Wednesday during the Game Developers Conference in Taipei,?Epic Games?CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that the company?s iOS franchise Infinity Blade is more profitable than even its biggest console game. ?The most profitable game we?ve ever made, in terms of man years invested versus revenue, is actually Infinity Blade,? Sweeney said. ?It?s more profitable than Gears of War.? This of course relates to profit versus investment and not the total profit Epic has earned from Infinity Blade. The original game grossed more than $1.6 million in its first four days of availability, while the sequel made over $5 million in its first month on the App Store. The mobile franchise went on to surpass $30 million in revenue this past January.

Success of fertility treatment may approach natural birth rate

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A groundbreaking study of nearly 250,000 U.S. women reveals live birth rates approaching natural fertility can be achieved using assisted reproductive technology, where eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries, combined with sperm and then returned to the woman's body.

The research, led by Michigan State University's Barbara Luke and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlights what factors help or hinder getting pregnant using assisted reproductive technology, or ART. The results indicate that when there are favorable patient and embryo characteristics, live birth rates with ART can approach those of natural fertility.

"This is good news for women who are trying to have a child," said Luke, a researcher in the College of Human Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.

The number of ART treatments has more than doubled in the past 10 years, and live birth rates traditionally have been reported per cycle, or per one course of treatment. While that is easily calculated and is the method used by national registries across the world, Luke's team sought to estimate cumulative success rates with continued treatment.

"Women and families want to know the overall chances they will get pregnant, not necessarily whether they will get pregnant during a specific cycle," Luke said.

Data were obtained from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology's Clinic Outcome Reporting System for women undergoing treatment between 2004 and 2009. The system contains data on more than 90 percent of all clinics performing ART treatments in the United States.

The study of 246,740 women revealed 57 percent of women achieved a live birth via ART treatment, and 30 percent of all ART cycles resulted in a live birth. Success rates declined with increasing age for women using their own eggs, especially for those ages 38 years and older, but not for women using donor eggs.

The estimated natural fertility rate of the general population is about 20 percent per month, and estimated rates of conceiving spontaneously are 45 percent, 65 percent and 85 percent after three, six and 12 months, respectively.

The study looked at factors such as patient age, diagnosis, response to treatment, cryopreservation and the stage at which embryos were transferred. Two major factors that influence ART success are favorable patient characteristics (specifically age) and good embryo quality. Among older women, live birth rates can be substantially improved with continued treatment and a change to donor eggs.

"Although the decision to use donor eggs is a very personal one, these analyses provide information regarding the likelihood of a live birth using this option," said Luke.

These results also could guide regulations governing health insurance coverage for infertility treatment. The number of treatment cycles covered by insurance is typically limited to two or three. The findings demonstrate that when using a woman's own eggs, the success rates continue to rise beyond two to three cycles; additionally, the study may help providers and women decide when it is appropriate to change to donor eggs.

The study team was made up of researchers from MSU, University of Michigan, Redshift Technologies in New York, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Cornell Medical Center in New York, Columbia University Medical Center in New York, Spectrum Health Medical Group in Grand Rapids and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Google Nexus 7 tablet is HD movie, book and game machine

21 hrs.

Just as?Google's developer conference was getting started, details of the company's?rumored Nexus 7 tablet emerged. As previously reported, it is a 7-inch tablet powered by a Nvidia?Tegra 3 quad-core processor?that will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and come in 8GB ($199)?and 16GB versions ($249). You can order today, but it ships in mid-July.

The display is true high-def ? 1280x800, so a bit better than 720p ? and there's a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera and microphone?for video chatting, though there's no rear-facing camera. (That's okay -- do you really take pictures with tablets?) It also has a micro?USB port, GPS, near-field communication and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's no mention of an SD card slot for expanding the memory, however.

Not surprisingly, it was built by (and even branded)?Asus, the manufacturer that had already?made the most headway with quad-core gamer-friendly Android tablets. (See our video on the Transformer Prime below.)

Clearly, at a starting price of $199, the Nexus 7 is positioned to compete with the similarly 7-inch?Kindle Fire, rather than taking on the 9.7-inch?iPad (and the 10.6-inch Surface tablet from Microsoft).

Although they were careful to make the device comfortable to hold, with a textured back and light weight, some people just prefer to have a case anyway. And there is indeed a nice little $20 matte polymer cover in which you can ensconce your Nexus 7 and protect its screen. It's available in gray right now, but Asus sent out a picture showing it in a number of bright yet muted colors:

Meanwhile, Google pitched the Nexus 7 ? with its gryoscope and accelerometer ??as "a serious gaming device." By way of example, they showed off the action-heavy game "Horn" and the zombie shooter "Dead Trigger."?

And because, with all of those tablets, content seems to be the biggest incentive, Google is playing up the Play store, even granting early buyers $25 in Google?Play credit and "some great free content" including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Even if you don't think any of the "Transformers" films is truly "great," it is nice to see Google aggressively pushing content, even adding TV shows and magazines to their lineup. Tablet buyers need a reason to buy a tablet.?

UPDATE:?Google has made the above video operational again, along with the following links to the?8GB and 16GB versions on Google Play. Have at 'em!?

Tricentenary for steam pioneer

A series of conferences focusing on energy is being held around the UK to mark the 300th anniversary of the world's first steam engine.

In 1712, Devon-born Thomas Newcomen's engine began pumping water from a coal mine in Dudley, West Midlands.

The invention allowed miners to extract previously inaccessible coal.

The latest conference, organised by the Newcomen Society, is being held in Manchester and focuses on the development of the UK's nuclear sector.

"He was the engineer who first made a steam engine that could be used in industry, and therefore in commerce," explained the Newcomen Society's Michael Bailey.

"Engineering before his achievements was very much serving a rural community, with things such as water wheels and windmills.

"At this time, coal mines were just growing just in this country because we had effectively de-wooded ourselves.

"Because [charcoal] was no longer available as a result of the lack of woodlands, the demand for coal grew rapidly."

However, the supply was limited because as the mines went deeper, they became prone to flooding; hence the need for a device to pump out the water in order to extract previously inaccessible coal.

Once it became operational in September 1712, Mr Newcomen's design was quickly embraced by other mines.

His steam engine has been credited as being a key player in igniting the Industrial Revolution.

Nuclear centred

The Manchester conference is focusing on the UK's leading role in developing civil nuclear power stations.

"The North-West of England is where research and development within the nuclear sector is dominant," said Dr Bailey.

"Manchester and the region is the epicentre for the UK's nuclear industry."

Among the speakers at the gathering, hosted by the Museum of Science and Industry (Mosi), is Paul Howarth, managing director for the UK's National Nuclear Laboratory.

He told BBC News: "Newcomen was the father of the steam engine, and Manchester became the centre of the steam-powered Industrial Revolution."

Prof Howarth, co-founder of the University of Manchester's Dalton Institute, explained that the nuclear theme for the regional conference was appropriate.

"[This] is where first John Dalton, and later Ernest Rutherford and Hans Geiger, did their vital work on atomic theory. A century later, the region remains at the heart of the UK nuclear industry with around half of Britain's nuclear industry located here.

"In organisations like the National Nuclear Laboratory, we are keeping that spirit of nuclear innovation alive today as we harness the industry's best brains and most modern laboratory facilities to make sure that nuclear facilities in the UK are safe, clean and based on the best technology possible."

The museum is also using the conference to launch an appeal to collect more items that help tell the region's role in the development of nuclear energy.

Energy curator John Beckerson said: "From the steam power pioneered in the industrial revolution to the latest research in the nuclear industry, it's an innovative sector.

"We want to develop our energy collections in the years ahead to reflect changes in energy technology. The experts at this conference will be advising me on the best objects to help us tell these stories."

The conferences by the Newcomen Society, which was founded in 1920 and has almost 1,000 member all over the globe, will conclude at the end of July.

The BOOT - The Business of Online Travel: Hanging up my BOOTs

Dear Readers - It is time for me to hang up my BOOTs.

My first posts were published in June 2006.? Six years later I have more than a 1,000 stories that have been viewed? 400,000+ times.? I have met hundreds of people, formed scores of business contacts and dozens of close friends directly as a result of this site.? I made Bloggers "blogs of note list". WASHINGTON (AP) ? The best way to determine a major college football champion seemed so obvious to so many for so long. Just have a playoff.

Now the people in charge of making that decision are on board, too.

Come 2014, the BCS is out. Playoffs are in.

A committee of university presidents approved a plan Tuesday for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the top football conferences.

For years, the decision-makers had balked at any type of playoff because they said it would diminish the importance of the regular season. If only two teams had a chance to win a championship in the postseason, even one loss could be too many. That made for some high stakes regular-season matchups. As recently as 2008, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive proposed the type of plan adopted Tuesday, and it was quickly shot down.

Four years later, minds changed.

"It's a great day for college football," BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock said. "As soon as the commissioners realized they could do this and protect the regular season, the light went on for everybody."

The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champ after years of griping from fans. The latest configuration is certain to make even more money for the schools than the old system ? and it still won't satisfy everyone. Some will think it's too small and, yes, there are some who liked things just the way they are.

"There were differences of views," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said. "I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp."

Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman was the most notable holdout. He had said that he preferred the status quo or a tweak of the Bowl Championship Series. Perlman said the playoff still wouldn't be his first choice, but he was not going to stand in the way of progress. After the commissioners presented their proposal to the presidents, it took the CEOs about an hour and a half to come to a decision.

"This is the package that was put forth and we will strongly support it," Perlman said.

Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a title game after the regular season, the way the BCS has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

The BCS has been a constant target for criticism. Lawmakers have railed against it. A political action committee was formed dedicated to its destruction. The Justice Department looked into whether it broke antitrust laws. Even President Obama said he wanted a playoff.

Now it's a reality.

No. 1 will play No. 4, and No. 2 will play No. 3 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The sites of those games will rotate among six bowls. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., is guaranteed a spot, and the to-be-determined site of the newly formed bowl created by the SEC and Big 12 is likely to be another, Slive said.

The other current BCS bowls ? the Orange, Sugar and Fiesta ? are not yet guaranteed spots in the rotation, but will get first crack at bidding for them. The Cotton Bowl, played at the $1.1 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has long wanted to be part of the BCS and will no doubt push to be a part of the rotation, possibly as host to the Big 12-SEC game.

The winners of the semis will advance to the championship on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the last semifinal. The first "Championship Monday" is set for Jan. 12, 2015.

The site of the title game will move around the way the Super Bowl does, with cities bidding for the right to host.

The teams will be selected by a committee, similar to the way the NCAA basketball tournament field is set. The men's tournament has 68 teams, and 37 at-large bids.

The football committee will have a much tougher task, trying to whittle the field down to four. This season, 125 schools will play at the highest level of college football.

Among the factors the committee will consider is won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and whether a team is a conference champion. The selection committee will also play a part in creating matchups for games at the four sites that do not hold a semifinal in a given year.

"I think it's tremendous progress," said Washington State coach Mike Leach, a playoff proponent. "Five years ago there wasn't even dialogue about a playoff. Instead of diving in the water, they dipped their toes in. I think it's' going to be ridiculously exciting and it's going to generate a bunch of money. I wish they dived in."

Leach predicted that the playoff field would eventually grow.

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, on the other hand, was happy to keep it small, and wants it to stay that way.

"I may be in the minority. I think we had a pretty good thing going," he said. "If it stays at four I think it will be fine. Think it will be pretty exciting."

No one has put a hard number on it yet, but this new format figures to more than double the TV revenue of the current BCS and Rose Bowl contracts. Those pay out about $155 million annually.

The commissioners want to lock in this format for 12 years with a television partner. The current BCS deal with ESPN runs through the 2013 season. The new format will be presented to potential TV partners in the fall, starting with ESPN.

There are still some details to work out, such as who will be on the committee and how exactly the money will be distributed among the conferences. But everybody in charge is on board.

While lower divisions of college football already have a playoff, the highest level has for decades used bowls and polls to determine its champion. Those days are coming to an end.

"A milestone that's good for college football," Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford called it.

And a long time coming.

Sony Xperia Ion (AT&T)

With terrific TV connectivity and a 12-megapixel camera, Sony's Xperia Ion ($99.99 with contract) is the ideal Android phone?for folks who want to take their movies everywhere, showing them on any screen available. It's quirky and not an industry leader in other ways, though, with weak phone calling performance and some other bugs.

Physical Design
The Xperia Ion is a large phone, the way phones seem to be nowadays. It's 5.2 by 2.7 by .4 inches (HWD) and a solid 5.1 ounces, all in black with a curved metal back that makes it wobble a little bit when placed down on a table. It feels like it's made of premium materials: The screen is cold glass, and the top and bottom of the back are soft-touch plastic. You're getting your money's worth here.

The front is mostly a 4.55-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel TFT LCD screen. The screen has unusually deep blacks, thanks to a technology Sony calls "mobile Bravia." Below the screen there are the usual four silkscreened soft buttons for Android actions. The headphone jack is on top, and there's a dedicated camera key on the side.

The Xperia Ion's battery isn't removable, but a sliver of the top of the back cover is, letting you pop in a microSIM card and MicroSD memory card.

Call Quality, Wireless and Battery
I didn't find the Ion to be a very good phone. Reception isn't the problem?volume is. The Ion's speaker is quiet, and its speakerphone is so quiet as to be barely usable. Making a call in a noisy outdoor area I could hardly hear my wife on the other end of the line, in either mode.

There's little noise cancellation in the microphone, too, so background noise comes through very clearly on the other side of calls. A call made from the Ion sounded a bit scratchy on the other end, and a call made from the Ion's speakerphone sounded muddy. In this case, a Bluetooth headset actually improved things.

The Ion is an AT&T-compatible LTE phone with national and global HSPA+ roaming, although it doesn't support T-Mobile's 3G band. AT&T only has LTE in 39 cities right now, but where it does, speed is scorching, usually exceeding 10Mbps down. The phone works as a Wi-Fi hotspot with the appropriate service plan.

Bluetooth and GPS make their usual appearance, and the GPS locked into our location without a problem. The Ion also supports two lesser-used wireless technologies: ANT and NFC. ANT+ is mostly used for health-and-fitness devices. NFC's most prominent app right now is Google Wallet, but Google Wallet isn't available in the Ion's Google Play market.

Battery life was mediocre, but not awful, with 5 hours and 20 minutes of talk time.?

Performance
The Ion runs Android 2.3.7 (Gingerbread) on a Qualcomm S3, 1.5GHz dual-core processor. This doesn't offer quite the speed we've seen from the S4 processor in the likes of the HTC One X ($199, 4.5 stars) and?Samsung Galaxy S III ($199, 4.5 stars), especially when it comes to gaming frame rates, but it does fine on benchmarks.?The interface was generally responsive, but the soft buttons at the bottom of the screen sometimes didn't respond to touches.

Sony's approach to Android adds a relatively light skin and some bloatware. You have various options to sort apps in the App Tray, for instance, and a very useful new Power Manager app which can turn off power-hungry radios when your battery is low.

Optional Facebook integration lets you add Facebook contacts and calendars to the phone's contact and calendar apps. If you're a fan of Sony's old Timescape, Rolodex-like display of social networking updates, you can install it as an app.

Sony's LiveWare Manager is another interesting utility: It lets you automatically launch an app when you connect an accessory, for instance launching the music player as soon as you plug in your headphones. This approach also comes into play with a new accessory called Xperia Smart Tags, little NFC-enabled stickers that can be configured to change your phone's settings or launch apps when you tap the phone to them. LiveWare Manager also provides a central place to manage the extensions for your Sony SmartWatch ($149, 3.5 stars), which puts email and social networking alerts on your wrist.

Of course, this being Android, it's compatible with all the 400,000-plus Android apps. Sony has made an unusually strong commitment to updating its phones, which makes us hope for an Android 4.0 update soon. But it's still disappointing that the phone comes with an older OS, especially now that the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X are both shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Mexico elections: failure of drugs war leaves nation at the crossroads

One after another, Mexico's presidential candidates sat in silence amid the grand setting of Chap?ltepec Castle while, across the room, the leader of the country's movement of victims of drug war violence ? a poet ? chastised them.

"The 60,000 dead, the more than 20,000 who've disappeared, the hundreds of thousands of people displaced, wounded and hunted, the tens of thousands of widows and orphans that this stupid war against drugs is costing us, do not exist for you and your parties," Javier Sicilia accused. "For you, the national emergency does not exist." One after the other, the candidates promised action and showed concern, then they left. It was time to get back to the real business of running for president.

The meeting with Sicilia last month was unavoidable, given the moral weight of the movement he represents, but it was also the only time in the entire three-month campaign when the undisputed issue of the day was the drug war ravaging Mexico.

Polls show that most Mexicans consider security, along with the economy, to be the two biggest issues facing their country, but neither has featured particularly heavily. "Everybody asks me where the security issue is. Why the candidates don't talk about the economy. The elephant in the room is President Felipe Calder?n's record, and that is hardly talked about," says pollster Jorge Buend?a. In Ciudad Ju?rez, which has just lost its title as the world's most dangerous city, now ranked second, the chronicler of the violence, journalist Juli?n Cardona, says: "To look at the candidates speak, you would think they were talking about another country."

But whatever the politicians' speeches, Mexicans know that the country must take urgent measures now to try to put an end to the appalling violence if it is to claim the place in the world its economy justifies. And although Mexico is umbilically tied to the US war on drugs, and fights on the frontline of that war, senior Mexican diplomatic officials suggest to the Observer in private that, whoever wins the election, this must change; that there must be a major rethink and a shift towards initiatives in Latin America that challenge the "war on drugs" to which the US remains committed.

Mexico's ambassador to London, Eduardo Medina Mora, a former attorney general, speaking to the Observer yesterday, said: "I dislike the term 'war on drugs' ? it is an over-simplification of a problem that is extremely complex. We have to increase our efforts, deepen our understanding of the problem, look back at what we have done, and correct it. We have to ask ourselves: 'Can there be a better way?'" He added: "We have to look at every aspect: the health aspects and the economic aspects as well as the rule of law. Our priority must be to assure peace for our citizens."

Ahead in the polls is Enrique Pe?a Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary party (PRI), which ruled Mexico for seven decades until 2000. His main campaign slogan ? "Change" ? reflects his efforts to construct an image of an effectiveness and reliability that contrasts with the widespread sense that under the rival, incumbent National Action party Mexico has lost its way, not least because of the drug wars. "This is my pledge," Pe?a Nieto says, looking straight at the camera, "and you know that I am going to fulfil it."

Running second is leftwinger Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador, who lost the last vote by a whisker; he heads the Party of the Democratic Revolution, promising "real change" and insisting he is the only candidate who is honest and genuinely cares about the troubles of the country and its population, especially its poor.

Trailing the polls, in the awkward position of being the candidate of a governing party that has manifestly failed to get the country under control, Josefina V?zquez Mota claims to be "different", though it is unclear in what way.

The drug wars are taking place against the backdrop of an economy that has responded robustly to the global crisis. Mexico is becoming a manufacturing powerhouse at a time of vindication for those countries that kept or developed their industrial bases, unlike its crisis-ridden giant northern neighbour. Its aeronautical and auto industries have helped propel growth rates since the crisis of 2008 and recession in 2009, with manufactured goods accounting for 84% of exports. Mexico aims for trade to account for 85% of GDP by 2017.

So the violence is a ball and chain around the ankles of a country with considerable potential. The hope among so many of the electorate, exhausted by the violence, is that the PRI, if it wins, will change gear with regard to America's "war on drugs", maybe even forge a coupling of overt force with other forms of coercion and entreaty. It is of significance that Pe?a Nieto has co-opted as his main security adviser Oscar Naranjo, the recently retired Colombian police chief who played a major role in confronting and decommissioning the cocaine syndicates. The drug policy expert Alejandro Hope argues that the old arrangement between the PRI and the cartels creates a "possible model, but not a very good one". He points instead to the "so-called demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration in Colombia, initially conceived as a mechanism for reintegrating guerrilla groups? and used to pacify criminal groups".

It is beyond question that during its seven-decade reign over Mexico the PRI operated a modus operandi of conviviality with the cartels. The rationale was that individual politicians and law enforcement officers would benefit, of course, but there was a wider motive ? that which in Italy is known as the pax mafiosa, the mafia's peace. Broadly speaking, this means that a modicum of understanding between the cartels and government ? national, regional and local ? allows for a sufficiently blind official eye to products rolling across the border into the US, in return for which the cartels maintain a balance of power between each other, respect each other's "plazas", or turf, and a general peace.

This is what prevailed throughout the 1970s and 1980s, when Mexican crime syndicates were generally organised within a pyramidal structure under the "don" of drug trafficking, F?lix Gallardo, and his formidable Guadalajara cartel.

But in 1989, under pressure from the US, the Mexican government arrested Gallardo, igniting a war for succession to his mantle, and for sections of the border in which he had ordained control. The present savagery began in December 2006, when Calder?n sent in the army to try to pacify the battle at the fulcrum of border trade ? both illegal and illegal ? at Nuevo Laredo, between the Sinaloa cartel, heir to Gallardo's syndicate, and the paramilitary enforcement wing of the Gulf cartel, Los Zetas, now a terrifying cartel in its own right.

Through the ensuing war, Mexico has been rife with rumours that Calder?n favoured the Sinaloa cartel and protected its elusive, fugitive leader, Joaqu?n Guzm?n, the world's richest and biggest mafia criminal. According to some US intelligence estimates, only 12% of those arrested since 2006 belong to the main Sinaloa cartel. In the runup to the election, however, two Sinaloa leaders have been arrested, one last week.

Accordingly, politics in those areas affected by the drug war ? the US border states, Veracruz, Michoac?n, Zacatecas and elsewhere ? became contaminated by the cartels' positioning themselves politically. As Rebecca Rodr?guez, a human rights worker in war-torn Reynosa in the border state of Tamaulipas, says: "There are elections between the PRI and PAN, but they are no more than Calder?n and the army backing the PAN, so the narcos back the PRI. You have the army on one side, the narcos and police on the other, and ? in the middle ? the economy, education, political life collapsing, normal communication broken down," said Rodr?guez.

The narco cartels have moved on from the 80s. They are pioneers of modern capitalism, and operate a fragmented free market, outsourcing to a miasma of killing interests and street gangs on which it would be impossible for even cartel leaders to impose a pax mafiosa.

The cartels have "substituted the old pyramidal chain of command for the same concession or franchising system as any other corporation", says Ignacio Alvarez Alvarado, a reporter from Ciudad Ju?rez. "Like a good modern capitalist, the cartel outsources, it puts contracts out to tender, to give other people a chance to compete. They're a business like any other, and the cartels have got much more democratic in the modern, capitalist sense: outsourced, meritocratic and opportunistic," he adds, drolly.

There has been a generational as well as economic evolution: the Zetas epitomise a new "style" of narco that is working-class, uninterested in patronage and the "honour" of the classical mafia represented by Gallardo or the Sicilian "godfather" figure. They are a form of insurgency and extreme violence is their "brand"; they operate across the internet with sick, black humour. They are less interested in playing politics than getting politics to play their game. "It used to be," says a campaigner in Tamaulipas, Mario Trevino, "that the politicians told the narcos what to do. Now the narcos tell the politicians what to do."

There is of course a long-term and genuinely radical course a new Mexican government could take: to shift the gear of its fight against drug cartels closer to the cogent initiatives emerging from Latin America, and notably Colombia, where President Juan Santos launched his call for a complete rethink of global drug policy to incorporate social issues and an assault on the laundering of the vast drug profits by banks in the US and Europe. This is extremely delicate for a country so dependent on the US and a recipient of a vast military aid budget. But, crucially, there are signs that, for all Mexico's bounden relationship to the US, and its acceptance of military aid along with political heavy-handedness, many of those steering the policy of whatever government comes next are anxious to move towards the Colombian position.

Medina Mora speaks with a blend of care and forthrightness. "If we want to face the problem," he says, "we have to have a thorough understanding of what that problem is, and we have to have a leadership that is committed to doing just that. This is not only an issue of drug trafficking, it is an issue of security institutions that are structurally weak, and cannot guarantee peace and security to Mexican people in the areas affected. This is where we want to go: to work on the police, on the judicial system, towards social cohesion and creating opportunities and jobs for the young people who are vulnerable to the criminals ? this is quite clear now. We have to re-examine what we have done. We will have to learn from the Colombian achievements, and from Colombian mistakes." A former attorney general, Mora adds: "Consumption and possession of drugs is not criminal in Mexico, and this is right, but it doesn't end there, and I think it's wrong to talk about blanket legalisation ? again, this oversimplification of a very, very complex issue."

In a clear reference to Mexico's northern neighbour, the ambassador said: "There has to be an acceptance of responsibility by countries at the consuming end ? with a high drug consumption rate ? and countries which cannot control their flow of weapons, and countries at the end of the value-added chain ? which is always closer to the consumer in any business." But on the matter of money-laundering, he added: "Of course, the money flows to the US bankers, but it is not enough to be always blaming Wall Street ? we all have to do something about the value-added end of the chain, again: another very complex issue that needs to be evaluated. This is how the debate should be: what are the policy choices? And to accept that this is not a matter of good and bad, but bad and worse, worse and much worse."

A senior Mexican diplomatic official admitted to the Observer last week: "What we did was to implement only the enforcement side of the drugs crisis. We did not implement a strategy for going after the money-laundering. We did not implement a strategy for restoring the social fabric. Now our priorities have to be: 1, bring peace to the Mexicans in their communities; 2, break the organised crime business model; and 3, turn this from being a national security threat to a public security issue."

And another senior government official said: "Let's have a full, global debate on drug policy. Not on legalisation ? that will just polarise everyone again. Let's have a debate that is not ideological, not moral or emotional, but expert and scientific. Let's get the facts, and sit the Americans down to discuss them. And if the Americans close their minds, let's try to open them."

'Giant wombat' mass grave found

Scientists have unearthed the biggest find yet of pre-historic "giant wombat" skeletons, revealing clues to the reasons for the species' extinction.

The find, in Queensland, Australia, of about 50 diprotodons - the largest marsupial that ever lived - has been called a "palaeontologists' goldmine".

The plant-eating giants, the size of a rhinoceros, had backward-facing pouches big enough to carry an adult human.

The fossils are believed to be between 100,000 and 200,000 years old.

Lead scientist Scott Hocknull, from the Queensland Museum in Brisbane, said: "When we did the initial survey I was just completely blown away by the concentrations of these fragments.

"It's a palaeontologists' goldmine where we can really see what these megafauna were doing, how they actually behaved, what their ecology was.

"With so many fossils it gives us a unique opportunity to see these animals in their environment, basically, so we can reconstruct it."

Ancient crocodile

The "mega-wombats" appeared to have been trapped in boggy conditions while taking refuge from dry conditions, Mr Hocknull added.

The pigeon-toed animals were widespread across Australia about 50,000 years ago, when the fist indigenous people are believed to have lived, but they first appeared about 1.6 million years ago.

It is unclear how or why they became extinct, but it could have been due to hunting by humans or, more likely, a changing climate.

The remote desert site contains one huge specimen, nicknamed Kenny, which is one of the best preserved and biggest examples ever discovered. Its jawbone alone is 70cm (28in) long.

The site is also home to an array of other prehistoric species, including the teeth of a 6m (20ft) lizard called megalania and the teeth and bony back-plates of an enormous pre-historic crocodile.

Mr Hocknull said: "We're almost certain that most of these carcasses of diprotodon have been torn apart by both the crocodiles and the lizards, because we've found shed teeth within their skeletons from both animals."

A relative of the modern-day wombat, the diprotodon inhabited forests, open woodland and scrub.

It was just one of several "megafauna" to roam pre-historic Australia.

Google Mistakenly Outs Android 4.1 In The Play Store, Galaxy Nexus To Be First Jelly Bean Phone

jellybeanWell isn't this interesting -- with just about five days to go until Google's I/O conference, the company may have just accidentally spilled the beans about their next big Android release. For a brief time, users who tried to purchase an unlocked Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play store was greeted by a blurb describing the device as the "the first phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean." Assuming this isn't just some random mistake Google has confirmed what nearly all of us expected their new update to be called, though there's sadly little other information to go on at this point.

How Justin Bieber Found His Hip-Hop Swag

Following the release of his hip-hop-heavy Believe, MTV News looks at the young pop star's swaggiest moments.
By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Jocelyn Vena

<P>You'd think a 1995 collaboration between the King of Pop, Michael Jackson and rap's widely recognized G.O.A.T., the Notorious B.I.G., would have made a bigger wave, but when MJ released <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2w1KXE5QMQ" target="_blank">"This Time Around"</a> with Biggie Smalls 17 years ago, mixing pop with hip-hop was still very taboo. Despite the top billing, the track hit with a relative thud. The truth is it just didn't feel organic, it's not like Mike grew up listening to rap in Gary, Indiana, in the 1960s, the art form as we know it today just didn't exist.</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was a 1-year old when the King of Pop snagged the King of Hip-Hop for a feature. And unlike Jackson, he grew up during an era when rap stars like Biggie, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur were just as big as their pop counterparts &#8212; sometimes bigger. That's why Bieber mixes hip-hop so seamlessly on his new album <i>Believe.</i></P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Scooter Braun Knows Justin Bieber Is 'Authentic'" id="vid:793827" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"One, I think they know it's authentic and two, you got to remember Justin's past," JB's manager Scooter Braun told MTV News. "I was the vice president of So So Def Records and then I left and Justin was the second artist I found after Asher Roth. So here's this 13-year-old living in Atlanta, no one knows who he is, and he's just riding around with me and we're in the studio with Ludacris. We're in the studio with T.I. We're in the studio with Big Boi from OutKast, hanging out and he got exposed to that really early."</P><P>Ludacris, Drake, Big Sean and Nicki Minaj all appear on the 13-track <i>Believe,</i> but JB's hip-hop jones didn't develop overnight.
