Rosacea may be caused by mite faeces in your pores

There are tiny bugs closely related to spiders living in the pores of your face. They have long been considered mere passengers, doing no harm beyond upsetting the squeamish. But they may be causing an ancient skin disease that is estimated to affect between 5 and 20 per cent of people worldwide, and 16 million in the US alone.

People aged between 30 and 60, especially women, sometimes develop rosacea: red inflamed skin, with swelling, roughness and fine, visible blood vessels, usually in the central zone of the face. Severe cases can resemble acne, irritate the eyes and lead to the bulbous red nose seen in caricatures of the elderly.

The disease affects all races but is known as the "curse of the Celts" as it is thought to especially affect people with very fair skin, although it may simply be more visible on their skin. Rosacea is commonly blamed on another alleged Celtic curse ? excessive drinking. But while alcohol can trigger a flare-up, so can many other kinds of stress. Teetotallers are just as susceptible, according to the US National Rosacea Society.

Kevin Kavanagh of the National University of Ireland, in Maynooth, now thinks he has discovered the cause ? and it isn't for the faint-hearted.

Tiny mites ? eight-legged arachnids related to spiders ? live in the pores of our facial skin. They are particularly fond of the hair follicles of eyebrows and eyelashes, and the oily pores most common on the nose, forehead and cheeks. Called Demodex, the mites eat sebum, or facial oil, and colonise your face at puberty.

Preference for stressed skin

They crawl about your face in the dark to mate, then crawl back into pores to lay their eggs and die. Healthy adults have around one or two mites per square centimetre of facial skin. People with rosacea, however, can have 10 times as many, says Kavanagh. Research suggests that the stress that causes flare-ups of rosacea changes the chemicals in sebum, making it better food for mites.

Rosacea often improves with antibacterial drugs that don't affect the mites, such as tetracyclines. Kavanagh thinks this is because rosacea is caused by a reaction to bacteria in the mite's faeces.

Demodex does not have an anus and therefore cannot get rid of its faeces. "Their abdomen just gets bigger and bigger, and when they die and decompose they release their faeces all at once in the pore," says Kavanagh. When the mites are numerous, he believes that the material is enough to trigger an immune reaction, inflammation and tissue damage.

Kavanagh notes that one kind of bacteria in the mites' guts, Bacillus oleronius, is killed by the antibiotics that work against rosacea, and not by other types of antibiotics. His lab reported in June that 80 per cent of people with the most common kind of rosacea have immune cells in their blood that react strongly to two proteins from B. Oleronius, releasing triggers of inflammation. Only 40 per cent of people without rosacea have this reaction.

Kavanagh is now trying to get funding to develop antibodies to the bacterial proteins, to track their location and link them more firmly to the disease. Ultimately, treatments aimed at the trigger proteins may prevent rosacea.

GAYTWOGETHER: Gay Relationships: ?Should We Have Sex Yet ...

GAYTWOGETHERpgtww033109 Introduction - Question: At what point does a dating relationship turn sexual if you?re looking for a lasting relationship?

The reader posing this question goes on to say that in his experience, sex too soon in a dating relationship seemed to make the connection all about sex, while waiting for an extended period of time resulted in men perceiving him as a ?tease? or being uninterested in them for anything but just friendship.

So what?s a guy to do? When is the right time to have sex so as not to sabotage the development of a potentially healthy relationship with a compatible dating prospect? Well, the long and the short of it is that there is no right time! There?s no science or magic formula to negotiating the right time to be sexual to guarantee lasting success. There are no guarantees in relationships. What it boils down to is each individual?s readiness and comfort level with taking things to that next step and keeping the channels of communication open.

So while there?s no hard-fast rule, this article will offer some tips and questions for reflection for you to decide when the time is right for you to take things to the ?bedroom level.? Through this content, perhaps you will discover some factors that might promote the opportunity for success of a long-term relationship that you can integrate into your own dating plan and sexual decision-making practices.

Sex & Gay Dating:

Sex is obviously a very important part of a relationship. In gay dating, sex actually plays a vital developmental role in helping a man to explore his sexuality during the coming-out process and forming his identity as a gay man; it?s a healthy rite-of-passage. Sex plays other roles though in gay culture. Its purpose can be for:

? pure recreational fun
? tension release
? a thrill for conquest
? a rebellion against heterosexist norms
? an uncontrollable addiction
? a way to boost one?s self-esteem
? a mask for emotional problems
? a temporary cure for boredom or loneliness
? horniness gratification
? a vehicle for avoiding emotional intimacy?among others.
For you, as the serious dater seeking Mr. Right, your vision for the primary purpose of sex is as an expression of your feelings of adoration for one another, cementing a bond of closeness and connection as you begin to seal an identity as a couple with the intention of life-long commitment.

Your job is to adequately screen your dating partners to determine if their vision for sexuality and life aligns with yours. It?s when there?s a mismatch between these visions or differing motives from the purposes above that leads to relationships ending before they even got started when sex enters the picture early on.

Knowing Thyself:

Before you even begin your dating adventures, you must have a solid vision in place of what and who you?re looking for. What are your personal requirements, needs, and wants for a life partner and a relationship? What does dating mean to you and what does it look like? What are your sexual values and attitudes? The answers to these questions become your guide for detecting the ?right? vs. the ?wrong? types of guys you?re seeking.

Sex is so glamorized in our gay culture that the pressure to succumb to its powerful influences can be overwhelming. That?s why you must have a plan in place before you date so you can more readily ?stick to your guns? and not be swayed by temptations or other forces. Knowing yourself and your values is key. Your beliefs about the role you want sex to play in your dating life will shape your behavior as such.

Meeting Mr. Wonderful?Now What?

It?s hard work creating your own vision, but then to assess another guy?s vision for compatibility is another feat that?s not easily accomplished in one or two dates. It?s a process. That?s why introducing sex too early into a dating relationship can be sabotaging because the relationship gets defined around sex before a foundation of trust and intimacy has been established.

This isn?t to say that meaningful relationships can?t evolve from a sex-based affiliation, but in a lot of cases premature sex can send the wrong message or tone that then permeates the entire relationship?and it can be irreversible. Not to mention determining your new guy?s sexual values and motives discussed earlier may not be so easily detectable in the early stages of dating.
?
Most gay dating experts agree that a wise approach for those seeking long-term relationships is to hold off on sex for at least 3-4 dates with a man. This allows time for a friendship to develop, to screen each other to the best you can for ?goodness-of-fit?, and lets the relationship be defined around common interests, goals, and mature companionship?enduring qualities that highlight successful relationships.

Sex alone is not sufficient to carry a lasting partnership. You?ll also be able to tell in a lot of cases whether the man is genuinely interested in you or if he?s solely after sex or gratification of other motives. Once you have sex, it changes the dynamics, so it?s important to pace the relationship.

Obama signs energy efficiency order

Published: Aug. 30, 2012 at 3:44 PM

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama signed an executive order Thursday to set a target for future energy and heat capacity and improve energy efficiency in U.S. factories.

The order "establishes a new national goal of 40 gigawatts of new combined heat and power capacity by 2020," the White House said in a statement.

That would be a 50 percent increase above current capacity.

Furthermore, "meeting this goal would save energy users $10 billion per year, result in $40 (billion) to $80 billion in new capital investment in manufacturing and other facilities," the statement said.

The order for "40 gigawatts of new combined heat and power capacity" refers to specific systems that include on-site power generation and heat retrieval systems. The CHP or combined heat and power goal, the White House said, would result in a reduction of harmful greenhouse gas emissions equal to the amount produced by 25 million cars.

"This action will cut costs, increase efficiency, and help our businesses create strong, middle class jobs. We'll continue to do everything we can to put more people back to work and build an economy that lasts," the president said.

Philippine economy expands 5.9 percent

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? The Philippine economy has expanded 5.9 percent in the second quarter, as the government increased public spending and inflation remained low.

GDP growth was slightly lower than the adjusted 6.1 percent in the first quarter, but Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said Thursday the figures are above market expectations and average regional growth.

He said risks include a weak global economic recovery, a slowdown in China and the El Nino dry spell that is expected to impact agriculture.

The biggest contributor came from the services sector. Steady inflows of remittances from Filipinos overseas propped up domestic spending while tourist arrivals grew 11.7 percent from a year ago to reach 2.1 million.

Balisacan said spending on infrastructure including housing for the poor and roads will include nearly $200 million in investment.

Health and Fitness Tips: Tips For Managing And Treating Your Acne

Acne may mean your skin isn't healthy. If you want to learn how to stop acne then you should continue reading this article.

Stress has been known to cause acne. Stress causes your body to produce stress hormones, including cortical. These hormones cause an inflammation reaction in the skin, which causes acne. While it is almost impossible to avoid stress entirely, there are ways to manage it more effectively.

When it seems that your acne will never go away, see if natural facial products make a positive difference. A large amount of products sold nowadays contain chemicals which are actually harmful to your skin and will only worsen your acne problems. This can lead to blocked pores, one cause of acne. There are a lot of great natural methods you can use to treat acne.

If you have acne, zinc can help you to prevent free radicals from damaging your skin. A zinc supplement will greatly diminish cystic acne; inside and out.

Only put natural skin products on your face when you have acne. The artificial ingredients in many skin care products can wreak havoc on your skin. Your face needs a certain amount of oil to remain healthy. Many chemical laden products strip all the oils off of your skin. Because of this, your skin produces more oil to make up for the excess loss. The increase in production causes more acne.

Honey is a wonderful home remedy for acne. Apply a little bit of honey mixed with cinnamon to your face, leave it there for about five to ten minutes, and then rinse. Your skin will be smoother and you will have removed excess oils and waste from your pores.

Acne happens when your organs are not in good shape! Make sure you keep your internal organs in good health. When all of your body's internal systems are functioning properly, acne is easier to beat.

In your fight to rid yourself of acne, avoid touching affected areas. Your fingers have dirt and oil on them which can be left on your skin, worsening your acne and spreading it throughout your face. Touching your face should be avoided as much as possible. Doing things like itching your nose, rubbing your chin, and putting your hand to your brow, can exacerbate your acne problem.

Obviously, acne can seriously hinder a person's social life. Serious acne can also leave lasting scars. By listening to what is being said within this article, you can treat acne so it does not negatively affect your life.

Toshiba 84inch 4K Quad Full HD TV handson video

84 seems to be the magic number at IFA. 84 inches, that is, when it comes to 4K TVs. Sony announced its jumbo 4K set at yesterday's press conference, and now Toshiba has returned with a matching high-res model of its own. The Toshiba set has a slightly sleeker housing, aided by the fact that it didn't have side-mounted speakers as with Sony's flavor -- though, if you're able to afford a (yet-unpriced) TV of this caliber, a premium surround-sound rig better be on the agenda as well. The picture quality, as you might expect, was fantastic. You'll see individual pixels once you're within a few feet of the display, but given its 84-inch footprint, you're going to want to position yourself quite a distance from the panel in order to take it all in.

Toshiba had three sets on display, running through loops of game play, cityscapes and some decked-out human models. The ambient setting was favorably configured, and with ideal content colors were vibrant and the picture was incredibly bright and sharp during our demo, even when viewed from a slight angle. There was a hint of reflection, but only when a dark image popped into frame, despite a multitude of visual noise in the area. You'll need to see Toshiba's 84-inch, 3,840 x 2,160-pixel TV in person to get the full effect (perhaps after it launches early next year), though you can take a (low-res) peek in our gallery below and the video after the break. You can also get a feel for the size -- keep an eye out for the Galaxy Note in the bottom left corner in the shot above.

Michigan athletes compete in 2012 Paralympic Games ...

Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, and Military Order of the Purple Heart are three congressionally chartered veterans service organizations that support sports and recreation programs for military veterans for rehabilitation and fitness.

Some of the athletes that benefit from their programs are going to the London 2012 Paralympic Games that begin Wednesday and end Sept. 9.

PVA?s programs include the PVA Sports 32nd National Veterans Wheelchair Games that co-hosted 540 disabled U.S. military veteran athletes in June in Richmond, Va., with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The multi-event sports rehabilitation program is open to vets who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems, and who receive care at VA medical facilities or military treatment centers.

Competition includes air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, nine-ball, motorized wheelchair relay, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track and field, trapshooting, weightlifting and wheelchair slalom.

Founded in 1946, PVA advocates for the rights of veterans and non-veterans who have disabilities, and focuses on spinal cord injury and disease. There are about 19,000 members.

PVA has a PVA-AWBA Bowling Tournament Series, a PVA-NWPA Billiards Tournament Series, a PVA Bass Tour, the PVA National Trapshoot and air rifle-air pistol competitions in locations all over the country. As part of the PVA Fitness and Wellness Program, the Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team has upcoming competitions in the Tour de La France in South Carolina; in the Pensacola Cycling Classic and in the Rims on the Run in Florida; and in the Army Ten Miler in Washington, D.C. Contact PVA Sports and Recreation at 1-800-424-8200, ext. 752 or 657, or Tom Brown at 817-225-2415.

Scot Severn, 44, of Caro, is the sports director for Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America, based in Novi.

He is one of 20 U.S. military vets among the 227 disabled athletes named by the United States Olympic Committee to be part of the U.S. Paralympic Team competing in London. The team, that includes six guides for visually impaired athletes, comprises 133 men and 94 women.

Severn became partially paralyzed in 1989 when he was struck by lightning while on duty with the U.S. Army Reserves at Camp Grayling. He graduated from Saginaw Valley State, married in 1994, and is the father of three children. He plays rugby for the Michigan Storm team.

He competed in shot put and discus at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic games where he was seventh in discus and ninth in shot put. He set a personal record then, and threw a national record, and has since set a new personal record. He goes into his second Paralympic Games as the U.S. No. 1-ranked shot put, discus and javelin thrower. He also is first nationally in discus and javelin. In world ranking, he is No. 2 in shot put and in the top five in discus and javelin. Continued...

Severn hopes to be ready for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He does three-hour workouts every other day, plus has throwing practice, and says that military training helps athletes with sports training.

Severn has traveled the world competing with premier athletes in field events and has received wheelchair rugby Most Valuable Player awards, earned silver medals in the discus and shot at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and holds numerous national records. He was the Michigan Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame?s Athlete of the Year for 2005.

In the track and field competition at the Paralympic Games, the United States is represented by 58 athletes making it the largest sport delegation for Team USA. Three of the athletes set world records at the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Trials ? Track and Field in Indianapolis.

There are 170 medal events ? 96 track, 70 field, and four road for 740 men and 360 women competitors at the Olympic Park ? Olympic Stadium (track and field) and The Mall (marathon.)

Severn?s teammates include a U.S. Navy vet from San Diego, and U.S. Army vets from Long Beach, Calif., Atlanta, Ga., and Pittsburgh, Pa. Athletics includes archery, cycling, fencing, rowing, shooting, sitting volleyball, soccer, swimming, wheelchair rugby, track and field, road running, cross-country running and race walking.

Paralympians are grouped into classes according to visual impairment and intellectual impairment such as traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputations or limb deficiencies, and for those using a wheelchair to compete.

Severn?s fellow veteran, U.S. Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, who was blinded in Afghanistan, competes in swimming on the one-year anniversary of his injury.

The Paralympic Games has about 4,200 athletes in competition. Americans will take part in 19 contested areas. Additional sports are boccia, equestrian, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sailing, soccer seven-a-side, table tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and wheelchair tennis.

At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, Team USA claimed a total of 99 medals, finishing third overall. Nineteen Beijing medalists are going to London including 11 other Michigan natives. Continued...

The Paralympic Movement began in England. The ?para? in Paralympic means parallel (to the Olympics.)

VA Paralympic website

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs launched a website for its Paralympic program a year ago as part of the VA?s ongoing commitment to support the rehabilitation and recovery of disabled veterans through participation in adaptive sports that encourages independence, reduced dependency on pain and depression medication, and reduces stress. The site contains information on training allowances, the VA Paralympic Grant Program, and resources for caregivers and VA clinical personnel. It is at va.gov/adaptivesports.

The program provides Olympic standard training, equipment, coaching and logistics for regional sports events for veterans hospitals and disabled veterans support services throughout the U.S. In addition to $8 million in annual funding to operate the program, $2 million a year is available for grants to individual disabled veterans to pay for additional athletic training needs.

More than $4.4 million in funds from the VA was awarded to 95 community-based organizations in support of Paralympic sport and physical activity programs for disabled vets and disabled members of the armed forces. Grants ranging from $2,500 to $500,000 were provided to USOC partner organizations and community programs to increase the opportunities for disabled veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more Paralympic programs at the regional and national levels.

Veterans training in eligible adaptive sports can apply for a monthly assistance allowance through the Paralympics Program if they meet the qualifying military standard for that particular sport. A veteran may be eligible whether his or her disability is service-related or non-service-related.

Rehabilitation and sports clinic for vets

The National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic promotes rehabilitation of body and spirit by teaching summer sporting activities to veterans with significant physical or psychological impairments. The clinic offers such sports as surfing, sailing, kayaking, track and field, and cycling to veterans who are newly injured from amputations, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder and other neurological disorders.

The National Veterans Golden Age Games is a national multi-event sports competition and recreational program designed to improve the quality of life for older vets. The program for veterans age 55 and older offers 14 different sports and recreational activities.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart helps to sponsor the National Veterans Golden Age Games. The 26th annual event took place last spring in St. Louis where the commander of MOPH Missouri Chapter 125 presented checks totaling $34,000, including a $30,000 grant from the MOPH Service Foundation, for transportation, food, equipment and supplies for the events. Continued...

MOPH formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of veterans and active duty men and women who have received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat.

Winter sports clinic and competition

The National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic instructs veterans with disabilities in adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and introduces them to other adaptive recreational activities and sports. Vets who have spinal cord injuries, amputations, traumatic brain injuries, neurological challenges and visual impairments may participate.

Disabled American Veterans and the VA co-sponsored the 26th annual clinic at Snowmass Village, Colo., in March for more than 400 participants who drew on the qualities they demonstrated in uniform to try winter and other sports. The group included nine active-duty service members and 94 veterans of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event ? that also involves rock climbing, scuba diving, trapshooting, wheelchair fencing, sled hockey and snowmobiling ? is called ?Miracle on a Mountainside.?

Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki is a disabled veteran who lost part of his right foot in Vietnam. He praised the strides the veterans at the clinic have made in their recuperation.

?You may have been injured, but life isn?t over. There is still a lot of living to do for all of us,? Shinseki said. ?It will be different, no doubt. And you are going to have to work hard to improve functionality. But that is the challenge and the triumph, every day ? to keep on living while you are living.?

Donald Samuels is immediate past DAV national commander.

?You have all faced down challenges in your service to our country, and I am urging you to rekindle your fighting spirit and do the same with the hurdles you may face here,? Samuels said. ?Make it part of your healing process.?

Seventh annual DAV golf outing

The Disabled American Veterans Department of Michigan holds its seventh annual Thomas A. McMasters III DAV golf outing on Sept. 8 at Fern Hill Country Club at 17600 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township. Register by Friday for the scramble format play, which is $320 per team for 18 holes. There is a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and hole sponsorships are available. Call 1-888-448-2328 for more information. There is a DAV office at 17779 E. 14 Mile Road in Fraser and a DAV thrift store in Westland.

Sony Interviews Inafune on Soul Sacrifice for PlayStation Vita

6h ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman has shared an interview with Inafune today on the upcoming video game title Soul Sacrifice for PlayStation Vita below.

To quote: In the world of video game development, Keiji Inafune is a giant among men.

The illustrator and former global head of production at Capcom has played a key role in the development of an astounding array of games spanning a diverse lineup of genres, everything from Mega Man to Resident Evil to Lost Planet and many more.

With his new role at Comcept and Intercept, Inafune is expanding his influence to new projects, including the upcoming "dark fantasy" PS Vita title Soul Sacrifice.

During Gamescom last week, we caught up with Inafune to learn more about his ambitious new game that forces players to make painful decisions.

PlayStation.Blog: How do you take something painful - sacrifice - and make it fun in a gameplay setting?

Keiji Inafune: If you hear the word "sacrifice" it obviously sounds painful. But that's because you think of sacrifice as sacrificing yourself.

But when you're playing together with your friends, it could be entertaining because it creates a new dialogue. If my character is dying, and my friend decides to sacrifice me, I might say "hey, what are you doing?! Don't sacrifice me!"

So it creates a reason to come up with new ways to fight. It could lead to different kinds of heroism; you could save a bad situation by sacrificing yourself or a friend, or ask your friend to sacrifice himself for the good of the group. I don't know that it's always "fun," but it's a new kind of entertainment.

You're forced to make choices in this game. Of course you could go through the game making smaller sacrifices - anything you find in nature you can use as offerings, rocks or a rat you find in a field - and you'll get a smaller amount of power. The more you sacrifice, the more power you'll gain. You're the one to make that choice.

PSB: You recently revealed the backstory about one of the game's monsters, the Griffon. When you don't know someone's motivations, it makes it easier to kill them. Do you want us to sympathize with these monsters?

KI: One of the things I want to illustrate is a feeling of guilt, a feeling of complexity. So there is sacrificing, but there is also saving. Those are the two extreme choices, the dilemma that you'll face every time.

I want you to make sacrifices, but I also want you to think about saving. Perhaps you're fighting a powerful enemy but you learn that he has a sick daughter that he has to save back home by earning money in battle. When you hear this during the battle, the nice part of you might think about losing so he can save his daughter. But you want to win your battle, too!

So you'll feel these complex feelings. I wanted to make this a big part of the game. Can you make these extreme choices given the situation?

PSB: Do you think moral ambiguity is something that's missing from video games? Are too many game stories focused on black and white, good versus evil?

KI: I've watched the evolution of games and the games industry for the last 25 years; I've always had a front-row seat. In many modern action games, it's about how realistic you can make the experience, how sensational the action is.

But the creators of the best games today have realized that they need to do something more than becoming more realistic, more sensational - it's probably already hit the ceiling.

They're thinking about creating something new by including that emotional aspect. In thinking globally, in order to compete with the top game creators today, I've also had to think about including that emotional aspect. The games I work on will all include that as a big theme.

PSB: Is there an advantage to sacrificing versus saving? Does your character develop differently?

KI: You've probably heard that you can customize your character, and you'll have a lot of choices and options. But the way you choose to fight will affect your appearance.

So if you keep on saving, or keep on sacrificing, the visual effect will look different; you'll look more angelic if you keep saving, more evil if you keep sacrificing.

If you go towards one extreme or the other, the time will come when it may be difficult to keep on going [in your chosen path]. If it's easier to sacrifice a particular enemy, you might face a difficult decision if you you want to save him.

But you can choose to stick with an extreme approach, and you'll earn more power if you choose the hard way. That might come into effect when you're playing with a party.

PSB: What more can you share about Soul Sacrifice's multiplayer mode? How can the different players work together?

KI: Multiplayer mode is definitely a big part of Soul Sacrifice. It's not just about four people getting together and fighting one monster, though.

You have to be strategic in terms of creating your party and choosing your sorcery. One player might want to be aggressive and fight on the front line, while another might want to save more and heal more. Another player might stop time in order to help the others.

Every party you come up with will have a different strategy, different ways to attack and fight. That's a big element of the game.

PSB: Developers have taken many strategies in creating PS Vita titles, from bite-sized games to home console-style games. What do you think makes the best portable experience?

KI: I was very involved with the Monster Hunter series, one that pioneered multiplayer gaming in a portable device, and I think my experience there will be very valuable as I explore PS Vita's opportunities.

That said, though there are many ways to approach game design I think that real-time online multiplayer is the most fun and exciting, though it can be challenging to create.

In a portable gaming environment, you can't have hours and hours of gameplay - 30 minutes is probably the comfort zone. I like to view it as playing chapter by chapter, as opposed to the whole book. At the end of each chapter, I like to see results.

In Soul Sacrifice, for example, you fight the boss character and at the end of the battle you decide whether to save or sacrifice [and that provides a payoff]. At the end of the game, you'll have a whole "book" of experiences. From my perspective, that approach makes a lot of sense for PS Vita design.

PSB: What more can you tell us about the universe of Soul Sacrifice? What inspirations did you draw from to develop the look and the lore?

KI: You begin Soul Sacrifice as a weak, hopeless human locked up in a mysterious cell waiting to be sacrificed. I wanted to create a dark fantasy world, but it's not about just creating a story.

If your character is placed in a hopeless situation, and you look through his eyes, anything would seem dark and depressing. "Dark fantasy" is a result of the situation you're in.

PSB: You've mentioned that one reason you're making this game is because you made sacrifices in your career. In your life, would you say you've saved more or sacrificed more?

KI: I would say that up until now, I've probably sacrificed more. But I believe I've made those sacrifices in order to earn something back. I want to save people... I want to save a lot of things, moving forward.

Windows 8 tells Microsoft about everything you install

Known computer security researcher Nadim Kobeissi has posted up some interesting information on the behavior of Windows 8 whenever you install an application. According to some quick researching he did, the Windows SmartScreen feature reports every application a user installs to Microsoft, and does so in a way that could be intercepted by malicious hackers.

The Windows SmartScreen feature is enabled by default and is designed to tell end users whether the application they have downloaded from the internet is safe to install on their machine. It does this by gathering some info upon opening the installer, sending it to Microsoft and then waiting for a response to see if said installer has a valid certificate. As Kobeissi mentions, this means information about every single application downloaded and installed is sent to Microsoft.

He dug further to discover the information sent could potentially be intercepted by a malicious hacker, as Microsoft uses an "outdated and insecure" method of HTTPS?encrypted?communications. If a hacker did manage to steal all the information on a user's application installation habits, they could make a profile of the user and use that to find other exploitable weaknesses.

The issue with SmartScreen is currently only prevalent in Windows 8 as it's the first time Microsoft has integrated SmartScreen at an OS level (Windows 7 only features SmartScreen in applications like Internet Explorer). You can disable SmartScreen so you are no longer reporting your installation habits to Microsoft, but this is apparently not easy to do and results in periodic nags to re-enable it.

Chances are Microsoft will not do anything about their implementation of SmartScreen, so as it stands now it could be a privacy and security risk.

49ers claim their first NFL team to film ?It gets better? video ? but Hawks did one more than a year go

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the San Francisco 49ers recently participated in an ?It Gets Better? video condemning anti-gay violence and bullying

The 49ers claim that they were the first NFL team to participate in this campaign. But of course, their NFC West rivals, the Seahawks, participated in this campaign over a year ago.

Here?s the press release from last year. The Seahawks participated in the campaign with the Seattle Storm, the Seattle Mariners and Sounders FC.

Check out the video here.

SEATTLE?S FOUR MAJOR PRO SPORTS TEAMS JOIN TOGETHER FOR ?IT GETS BETTER? VIDEO

Inclusiveness, fair play, diversity core values all four teams share

The four major professional sports teams in Seattle have joined together to create a video message for the ?It Gets Better Project.? Players from the Seattle Storm, Seattle Sounders FC, Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners are featured in the video, which was posted today on YouTube, the individual team websites, and was submitted today to www.itgetsbetter.org.

The participating players are center/forward Lauren Jackson and forward Swin Cash of the Storm, forwards Mike Fucito and Roger Levesque of the Sounders, wide receiver Mike Williams of the Seahawks, and relief pitcher Brandon League and infielder Brendan Ryan of the Mariners.

?As far as we can tell, this is the first time a community?s professional sports teams have joined together to take a stand on this important issue. We are proud to be part of it,? said Chuck Armstrong, Seattle Mariners President and COO.

?The messages in the video are core values of our organization, so it was easy for us to agree that the Storm would participate,? said Karen Bryant, Seattle Storm President and CEO.

?We believe our role in the community is very important,? said Seahawks and Sounders FC president Peter McLoughlin. ?This video provided an opportunity for all the professional teams to come together and offer a message of hope and encouragement to our young fans.?

The It Gets Better Project and website were launched in Seattle last fall by syndicated columnist Dan Savage in response to a startling number of teen suicides and bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens. In the months since, tens of thousands of individuals and organizations have posted videos that offer encouragement and support to LGBT youth.

Sony Music Unlimited (for PlayStation Vita)

Sony Music Unlimited represents a rare thing?a streaming music service that's available on a portable gaming device. Certainly, handhelds aren't required to have them?gaming is the focus, after all?but it's very cool to stream your favorite songs and compositions over 3G and Wi-Fi as you're passing time in a waiting room or zoning out on a commute. That said, Sony Music Unlimited lacks a free option, so you must pay a premium (starting at $3.99 per month). Considering that there's no Slacker or Songza available on gaming units at this time (streaming music services with quality free options), it may be worth the investment if you're a PlayStation Vita ?owner.

The Basics, Interface
Sony Music Unlimited offers a library of over 15 millions of songs on demand for those willing to pay the $9.99 per month Premium subscription. A lower-priced Basic membership is available for $3.99 per month, but it lacks on-demand playback, library building, playlist building, some genre-based channels, and other features that make Premium accounts worthwhile. Sony offers a 30-day trial if you want to dip your toe into the pool, but the lack of a truly free offering is a downer.

The interface consists of album art arranged into five rows: A top spot (that rotates between Top Songs, Top Artists, and Top Albums), Recently Played Channels, Newly Added to My Library, New Releases, and You Might Like, the app's recommendation area. Navigation is a simple as swiping between rows and icons with a finger.

The Listening Experience
Tapping a song icon starts the music playback and displays the album art, song title, artist name, and runtime. There are also options that let you like or dislike a song, as well as add the song (or entire album) to a playlist or My Library. You can also cache those added songs for offline playback?a handy feature if you're outside 3G or Wi-Fi signal range. A column in the right portion of the screen houses related music that you should check out. The Home button in the upper-right hand portion of the screen reveals a menu bar with shortcuts that let you quickly jump between areas.

Sony Music Unlimited's audio quality is surprising good, whether you listen through headphones or the PS Vita's speakers, and the tracks played smoothly over our office Wi-Fi connection. The music selection is impressive?I've found every album from The Dirtbombs, an indie Detroit-based rock band. There's comedy, too; Patton Oswald's three major comedy albums are also in the library, as well as other acts. Unfortunately, Sony Music Unlimited only has two of Joe Rogan's handful of comedy discs, so there are some gaps in the library.

On the upside, playlists sync between the mobile app and the browser-based app, so your Sony Music Unlimited Experience remains the same across platforms.

Nearly Unlimited Joy
Sonic Music Unlimited is the lone streaming music service on the PS Vita?that alone makes it worth a look if you're into such things. That said, you need to plop down $9.99 per month if you want to get the most out of the service. If you do, you shouldn't be disappointed, despite a few album omissions.

What does a flood of corrosive sludge do to a forest?

Douglas Heaven, reporter

BM_TOXIC_01180353.jpg

(Image: Pal?ndromo M?sz?ros/Barcroft Media)

NEITHER art installation nor photographic effect, this is the high-tide mark left by a million cubic metres of corrosive sludge that burst the banks of an industrial reservoir in Ajka, Hungary, in October 2010. Sweeping across farmland and through the villages of Kolont?r and Devecser in waves up to 2 metres high, the red deluge swept cars off roads and damaged houses, before spilling into the river Torna, a tributary of the Danube. At least seven people were killed, over 100 injured, and many more displaced.

Visiting the site six months later, Spanish photographer Pal?ndromo M?sz?ros documented the effect on the landscape in a series of images he called The Line. The breached reservoir held caustic waste from a local plant that refined bauxite ore into an aluminium oxide known as alumina, the basic ingredient for manufacturing aluminium. Chief among the components of this by-product was iron oxide - hence the rust-red staining - but it also contained highly alkaline sodium hydroxide, used to dissolve aluminium oxide.

In the days following the flood, huge quantities of gypsum plaster and chemical fertilisers were tipped into rivers to bind the sludge and to neutralise its alkalinity. The Hungarian prime minister blamed human error. By the time M?sz?ros witnessed the aftermath, people had been rehoused and the red scar was fading - though toxic dust was still present in the air, he says.

In The Line, M?sz?ros had a purpose beyond capturing the haunting beauty of the disaster. "I think that we suffer an overexposure to images that leads us to a lack of sensitivity towards the big dramas," he says. The images depict "a terrible accident, not a beautiful installation", but it is the aesthetic impact that first grabs our attention. See the full series of photographs at www.palindromo.info.

Mars rover Curiosity wiggles wheels

Despite a broken wind sensor, NASA prepared its Curiosity rover for a test drive by wiggling four of its six wheels. Wednesday's drive (Curiosity's first on the Red Planet) will take the rover 10 feet and back.

By Robert Jablon,?Associated Press / August 21, 2012

The movement of the rear right wheel of NASA's Curiosity as rover drivers turn the wheels in place at the landing site on Mars is pictured in this handout taken by one of Curiosity's Navigation cameras, and released by NASA.

Scientists on Tuesday prepared to send Curiosity on its first test drive over the billion-year-old rocks of?Mars?and said a busted wind sensor won't jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena turned four of the rover's six wheels in place this week in a successful "wheel wiggle" to test the steering for Wednesday's trek, mission manager Mike Watkins said.

"We are go for our first drive tomorrow," Watkins said.

The rover will move forward about 10 feet (3 meters), turn right, then back up and park slightly to the left of its old spot, Watkins said.

"You will definitely see tracks," he said.

The test drive is part of a health checkup the rover has been undergoing since arriving on Aug. 5. Eventually, the rover could roam hundreds of feet a day over the ancient crater where it landed.

Meanwhile, researchers discovered the damaged wind sensor while checking out instruments that Curiosity will use to check the Martian weather and soil.

The cause of the damage wasn't known, but one possibility is that pebbles thrown up by Curiosity's descent fell onto the sensor's delicate, exposed circuit boards and broke some wires, said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity.

A second sensor is operating and should do the job, but Vasavada said scientists may "have to work a little harder" to determine wind speed and direction, which are important factors that can determine when the rover is allowed to move.

"But we think we can work around that," he added.

Scientists also continued to test and calibrate Curiosity's 7-foot (2.1-meter)-long arm and its extensive tool kit ? which includes a drill, a scoop, a spectrometer and a camera ? in preparation for collecting its first soil samples and attempting to learn whether the Martian environment was favorable for microbial life.

Warner Bros. Extends Digital Copy Expiration Dates

Most new-release Blu-rays these days include a Digital Copy, either on a separate disc or via an included download code. The catch, however, is that most distributors set the expiration date of the activation code to a year or so after the movie first goes on sale. This doesn't mean you only have a year to watch the digital copy, it just means you have to actually activate the code online within that window. If you buy a movie a year after its release, you're out of luck.?

It's a lame cap to an otherwise convenient service and it's put there with the intention that it'll drive more sales and people will buy physical movies sooner lest they lose the opportunity to claim their included Digital Copy. Thankfully Warner Bros. realizes that the cap is lame, and so they've extended the Digital Copy expiration date on all of their titles until May 17th, 2017. And not only that, but they've also reactivated already expired codes and given them a new five-year lease on life.

Various tech websites have been covering the change in policy, with users reporting varied results. In most cases it appears that expired codes are now activating normally, though some users have apparently had to contact Warner Bros. customer service to get a new code. Either way, the studio seems to be pretty accommodating to those looking to get the most out of their purchase, and we applaud them for that. Hopefully more distributors follow their lead.

Acer launches Liquid Gallant, Liquid Gallant Duo in preparation for IFA

Acer

Acer's itchy trigger-finger has caused it to launch two new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered smartphones before IFA kicks off next week. The Liquid Gallant comes in single (Solo) and dual-sim (Duo) variants, packing a 1GHz MT6575, 1GB RAM, a 4.3-inch qHD capacitive display, 5-megapixel camera and a 1,500mAh battery. It'll include 4GB on-board storage, which can be bolstered with microSD up to 32GB, there's 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR. The budget-nature of the specs gives us hope that it'll be moderately priced when the Duo arrives in September, rapidly followed by its single-sim kid brother -- with both available in "Gentle Black" and "Ceramic White."

Marketing Analytics | Domain Information from Buydomains

Is your online marketing strategy paying off?

Everyone has a different approach to marketing their business online, but what really matter is whether or not your strategy is working. You?ve read dozens of how-to marketing blogs, heard about numerous success and failures, and implemented what you believe to be the best plan for your business, but is it proving successful?

The objective of marketing is to drive sales, so it is important to determine whether your marketing efforts are resulting in more sales or if the flux in sales is just a coincidence. While it is easy to assume that an increase in sales is a direct result of the marketing campaign you just launched, wouldn?t it be nice to know if those sales were an outcome of your hard work?
Marketing Analytics
The ability to track each detail of every marketing campaign is one of the main perks of marketing online. Today, with the help of a marketing analytics program, such as Google Analytics, it is fairly simple to track your customers? internet activity. There are endless advantages to using the analytics tool and the information is vital when evaluating your online marketing strategy.

Google Analytics allows you the ability to see the number of visitors to your site, the sources in which they originate from, and also the mediums through which they travelled to your site. Information based on visitors demographics such as language and country is also available, and may be useful when trying to target a specific segment of individuals. Furthermore, you can set up conversion points to see if visitors completed certain actions on your site, such as signing up for a membership or purchasing a product/service.

The analytics platform provides a vast amount of information, but what you?re looking for in particular is ?Traffic Sources,? which shows how people are finding your site. This section of Google Analytics allows you to narrow results to particular sources.

For example, if you just launched a contest on Facebook and are interested if the interaction with your fans is paying off, you filter to see how much of your total traffic has come from Facebook, and how many of those individuals have actually made a purchase or filled out a form because of it.

With the help of this information, you are able to determine whether the contest resulted in any return and choose to run a similar contest again, or try something new next time. This tool can help to track any of the advertising outlets you use, whether you try a Google Adwords campaign or work to create social media interaction, you are able to track and recognize the success of each marketing effort you pursue.

If you don?t have a plan of action for your marketing strategy yet, here are some helpful tips to get you started. It?s crucial that you build your web presence now as a growing number of small businesses become more visible online. Don?t get lost in the 25% of small businesses that don?t even have a website to promote their businesses on the internet.

Businesses in India Overcoming E-Commerce Challenges ...

The present growth of e-commerce in India is marred by many challenges ? security of online transactions being the biggest challenge. The problem for many of the e-commerce businesses are due to two reasons ? lack of proper infrastructure and poor customer awareness of the online frauds.

Many of the small business owners in India overlook the importance of the authentic software, mainly due to budget constraint. According to a survey (2011 Small Business Virtualisation Poll) by Symantec, though many small businesses are showing interest in online business, many of them are not taking even the basic steps to secure and protect their online business. It states that around 75 per cent of the respondents didn?t have antivirus on their virtual servers and more than 50 per cent didn?t have a firewall.

Many businesses use pirated software and they don?t even update their anti-virus. The main risk associated with the pirated software and anti-virus is that there are no security upgrades available for them, which makes them more vulnerable to spy and Trojan attacks. This counterfeit software deployed by them has high chances of getting injected with malware, virus, bots, and loggers. It is risky to do online financial transactions on such computers as the bank and credit card info could be stolen while doing the online transactions.

When it comes to customers, very few are aware of the online frauds. A survey by Norton states that half of the Indian Internet users are unaware of the online security solutions available to them.

How businesses are overcoming these challenges?
Significant percentage of the business sectors in India are impaired by the above mentioned challenges. In spite of all these challenges, there are few sectors that have overcome (and are still overcoming) these challenges successfully and represent the solid and real growth of e-commerce in India. They are the banking and financial sectors.

Banks beefing up their cyber security
Banking and financial institutions in India have individually taken the charge to control online banking frauds to not only protect their interests, but also the customers? interests. Any kind of phishing or malware attacks from either the customer?s side or the bank?s side will lead to the leakage of financial credentials and thus result in bogus transactions. Hence, many of the reputed banks in India such as State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC, ICICI, etc. are beefing up their cyber security by following best in the industry practices such as, implementation of 256-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, etc.

Banks spreading awareness on online transactions
Banks are also creating awareness among their customers about cyber security by sending SMS messages such as ?don?t give passwords?, don?t perform transactions in cyber cafes?, ?install authenticated software for computing?, etc. Some banks are also advertising in newspapers and magazines. Further, almost all banks including State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National bank (PNB), Axis bank, have a prominent section on their home page designed for cyber security tips and suggestions.

The very recent announcement of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to act against the banks that do not implement guidelines on electronic security of their transactions and operations by October 2012 stands as a testimony of their serious effort to ensure safe net banking.

Some online retailers use their employees to deliver the products and collect the payments on delivery, thereby, reducing both, online transaction and delivery risks. Sites such as Flipkart.com, Snapdeal.com, Jobang.com, etc. offer cash on delivery. This is encouraging people to make more transactions with online stores.

Visa ? verified by Visa password
Added protection is ensured for online shopping with many of the Indian banks offering the ?Verified by Visa? service. ?Verified by Visa? is a service which gives you an extra password that re-confirms your identity while making online transactions. Many banks including Indian Bank, State Bank of India, ICICI bank are offering Visa cards, which are automatically activated with this service. One can also activate his/her normal credit and debit cards for this service and have the facility of making safe online transactions at the ?verified by Visa? online stores. This simple to use service enables authorized payments and safe online shopping.

Even in case if someone is able to get hold of credit card details (typically when using the card at a physical store) they would not be able to know the ?verified by Visa? username and password. This protects the credit card holder from unscrupulous persons stealing their credit card number, expiry date and code to make online purchases.

Overall, there has been significant innovation done by both e-commerce companies as well as financial institutions in India to encourage online purchases. Today, the people who are aware of online risks and have built the competence to deal with it are safely doing online transactions. The increase in the size of this kind of people is essential to sustain e-commerce growth in India.

Garcia claims 2-stroke win at rainy Wyndham

(AP) ? Sergio Garcia claimed a two-stroke victory Monday in the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship to earn his first PGA Tour victory since the 2008 Players Championship.

Garcia finished with a 66 to wind up at 18-under 262 and claim $936,000 in prize money.

Tim Clark was at 16 under following his 67 in the final tour event before the playoffs, and Bud Cauley finished 15 under after his 68.

Garcia led both after the third round and when the fourth round was held up overnight due to a persistent downpour.

He had three straight late-round birdies after a bogey briefly dropped him into a tie for the lead, and cruised to his eighth career PGA victory.

Garcia began the decisive surge on the par-4 No. 13, plopping his chip roughly a foot from the flagstick and tapped it in for birdie.

He added another birdie on No. 15 ? a pretty chip from a greenside bunker left him with a 5-foot putt ? and followed that with another birdie on the par-3 16th after his tee shot stopped closer than 2 feet from the stick. He added a birdie on No. 17 to move to 19 under, leaving his bogey on the final hole inconsequential.

It was a bit of redemption for the 32-year-old Spaniard, who in his last appearance in Greensboro in 2009 held a share of the lead after three rounds but let it slip away and finished in fourth place.

This time, he finished strong to give a huge boost to his candidacy for a spot on the European Ryder Cup team. The 10 automatic qualifiers will be set following the Johnny Walker Invitational with Jose Maria Olazabal making two captain's picks.

In addition to the quests by players on both sides for Ryder Cup selections, much of the focus ? as it always is at the tour's annual late-season stop in central North Carolina ? was on the chase to make the FedEx Cup playoffs, which begin in a few days at The Barclays.

But everything wound up taking a back seat to the weather, as heavy rains dumped more than 2 inches of water on the Sedgefield course on Sunday.

The final round was halted at roughly 3 p.m. with 38 players still on the course and seven players within three shots of Garcia. The decision came 2? hours later to hold off until Monday morning ? the first Monday finish in Greensboro since 1983.

Clark, a South African and local favorite who played college golf at North Carolina State, matched Garcia at 15 under with a birdie on his third hole of the day, the par-4 No. 8. Garcia moved to 16 under with a birdie on the par-4 No. 11, but he gave that stroke back with a bogey on the next hole after missing a 10-foot putt for par.

Moments later, Chad Campbell joined them atop the leaderboard after his third consecutive birdie came on the 17th. Then Garcia made his big move.

Among the playoff hopefuls, Heath Slocum played his way into The Barclays. His final-round 71 left him at 7 under for the tournament and pushed him to No. 124. He came in at No. 128.

"Every little point helps, every little dollar helps," Slocum said.

Jason Dufner could have taken over the top spot on the points list with a victory, but he finished five strokes back and wound up at No. 2 to Tiger Woods. He came in at No. 3, the highest-ranked player in the standing.

Curiosity is new Mars star, but Opportunity's still knocking

For more than eight years, an elite team of drivers has been maneuvering the most unusual of vehicles across treacherous and distant terrain.

The drivers of the Opportunity rover, a 400-pound robot sent to scour the Martian surface for signs of water, have been navigating the Red Planet without much fanfare.

But now, there's a new rover in town.

Curiosity is the souped-up, tricked-out lab on wheels that landed Aug. 5. It has about five times the mass of its predecessor and boasts fancy new gadgets, including a laser-shooting red eye and a chemistry lab in its belly. Unlike its solar-powered elder, the new rover can work through the long winter nights using its nuclear power generator.

It's rather like the difference between driving your parents' beat-up sedan and a brand-new SUV.

Over the last few years, many rover drivers have been pulled from their Opportunity duties and tasked with driving Curiosity. Now the new rover has 16 people on its driving team, while the older one is left with four.

How does it feel to be one of them?

Not so bad, it turns out.

"We're going to be working a few more shifts than we used to ? but we always wanted more shifts anyway, so that's not a problem," said Ashley Stroupe, an Opportunity driver who also worked with its rover twin Spirit before its demise in 2010.

Indeed, the engineers still driving Opportunity insist they aren't jealous of their colleagues. Far from it.

For one thing, many of the men and women driving Curiosity from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada Flintridge have worked with both rovers, said Matt Heverly, the lead driver for the new mission who cut his teeth with Opportunity. After all, he said, experienced rover drivers are hard to come by.

In fact, Opportunity has taught the Curiosity drivers some handy tricks, said Vandi Tompkins, who also has worked with both vehicles.

When Opportunity got stuck in thick Martian sand, the rover kept turning its wheels, thinking it was driving steadily along. Now, Tompkins said, the drivers make the rover take regular snapshots on its journey so that they know it is making progress.

These sorts of lessons even factored into Curiosity's design, she added. For example, its six wheels have Morse-code hole patterns that will make distinctive tracks in the sand, helping drivers estimate how far the rover has traveled across otherwise featureless dunes.

The scrappy Opportunity has earned the love and admiration of its human caretakers, who have learned to work around the challenges presented by its ailing and arthritic body. When its shoulder joint gave out, the drivers figured out how to properly position Opportunity's arm using its wheels, Tompkins said.

It's the sort of challenge engineers enjoy because it keeps them on their toes, Stroupe said. It may be a while before Curiosity provides that kind of fun.

A good-natured rivalry may yet develop between the two teams once Curiosity rolls away from the spot where it touched down in Gale Crater ? distance records to break, roving life spans to push.

"I'm sure there will be," Heverly predicted. "Things like, 'Who makes the better cookies to celebrate big events?' or something like that."

During Curiosity's testing phase, team members took models of it and the much-smaller Opportunity out to the Dumont Dunes in the Mojave Desert ? a traditional proving ground for Mars rovers ? and raced them up the slope, Heverly said. Curiosity won. But there were no hard feelings.

"We definitely are all on the same team," Heverly said.

For now, the teams remain distinct because Curiosity drivers are working on Mars time, throwing them out of sync with Earth's 24-hour day. But once Curiosity drivers shift back to Earth time sometime before the end of the year, many team members hope they'll be able to work with both rovers.

"It's great to have another rover on the planet again," said Julie Townsend, Opportunity's lead driver. "Since we lost the Spirit rover a couple years ago, Opportunity's been lonely, I think."

Curiosity may now be playing the leading role at JPL and in the public eye, if its 1-million-plus Twitter followers are any indication. But Opportunity will always hold a special place in the hearts of rover drivers like Scott Maxwell.

"It's very much like when you have a first car," he said. "It doesn't really matter what any of your cars are after that, you always kind of love that first car."
