The Washington Capitals named Calle Johansson assistant coach on Wednesday.
Johansson played in a team-record 983 games with Washington from 1989-2003 and is the club's all-time leader in points (474) and assists (361) by a defenseman.
The 45-year-old Johansson helped the Capitals reach the playoffs in 11 of his 15 seasons. He holds franchise playoff records by a blueliner for games played (95) and points (54).
The Swede was drafted by Buffalo with the 14th overall pick in the 1985 draft and got traded to the Caps late in the 1988-89 season.
Johansson worked briefly as a scout for the Capitals after retiring in 2003. However, he came out of retirement to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of the 2003-04 season. He appeared in eight regular-season games and four playoff contests before retiring at the end of the season.
He totaled 119 goals and 416 assists in 1,109 NHL games.
